Well done Smith – Aston Villa splashing £10m on this 76-goal star is a smart move

Why Mbwana Samatta would be a fantastic signing for Aston Villa

According to BBC, Aston Villa have signed Genk star Mbwana Samatta for a fee of £10m. The report claims that the Villans have agreed on a 4.5-year deal with the striker.

Dean Smith’s attacking options have been severely dented as Wesley Moraes has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Wesley, who has scored six times this season, has been sidelined with a serious knee injury sustained against Burnley on New Year’s Day.

That has left Aston Villa in dire need for goals. Jonathan Kodjia has never been a prolific goalscorer throughout his career and is close to leaving the club this month, while Keinan Davis is still very young to lead the attack week in and week out.

Anwar El Ghazi has impressed in flashes, while Mahmoud Trezeguet has struggled to properly adapt to the demands of the Premier League. Jota has hardly been used.

The 1-1 draw vs Brighton at the weekend sees them occupy 18th place in the table, a point adrift of safety. Thus, getting attacking reinforcements is a no-brainer and signing Samatta is a good choice.

Samatta, who scored against Liverpool in the Champions League group stage this season, has netted 10 goals across all competitions for Genk. In fact, he has scored 76 goals and supplied 20 assists in 191 games for the Belgian outfit, and won the league title last season.

The Tanzania international striker will have to hit the ground running for Villa, who are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Given his numbers, Samatta could get them some much-needed goals if he reproduces the form he has shown for Genk.

Verdict

Samatta is a good addition for Aston Villa. The 27-year-old would add depth to the squad and spring life to their attack as well, given his goalscoring record for Genk.
