Brighton signing this searing £17m-rated forward would be an exciting addition – Agreed?

Why Matheus Cunha would be an exciting signing for Brighton

According to Sky Sports, Brighton have joined a number of top European clubs in the hunt for RB Leipzig’s forward Matheus Cunha.

Matheus Cunha, 20, has had a frustrating season so far with zero goals in his 13 appearances across all competitions, including in the Champions League group stages. But he did manage nine goals last season in all competitions to help build his reputation.

The report adds that the Brazilian forward is available for around £17million during the January transfer window. Wolves are also interested in Cunha but Brighton must do everything possible to win the forward’s signature.

Brighton have performed very well until now in Graham Potter’s first season in charge of the club. Potter’s side have turned a lot of heads this season, picking up solid results against top sides this season.

The Seagulls have become a possession-based side under the new management, playing an exciting brand of football.

Having enjoyed a good start to the 2019/20 campaign, Brighton must hope to clinch a top-half finish. For that to happen, Potter should seek reinforcements this month.

The Seagulls could see Glenn Murray depart the Amex this month (h/t Brighton and Hove Independent), which will leave Potter with just Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly as options upfront.

Murray has served the club very well and wants to leave Brighton for regular football. That makes the signing of a new striker no-brainer as Potter simply cannot rely on Maupay and Connolly for goals. To put things plainly, Matheus Cunha would be a good fit at the Amex.

Cunha first rose to the spotlight after scoring an incredible goal against Bayer Leverkusen last year which was nominated for the Puskas award.

He may have not been able to turn heads with RB Leipzig this season, but the South American is one of the most exciting prospects in the Bundesliga and simply needs a move away from Leipzig where he’ll get regular opportunities to fulfil his potential.

Under a progressive manager like Potter, Cunha could hone his finishing skills and take his overall game to the next level.

When one watches youngsters like Steven Alzate, Aaron Connolly and Neal Maupay thriving under Potter this season, there’s little doubt that a player of Cunha’s ability and potential would not do well at Brighton.

Someone like the Leipzig man would be the perfect man to provide cover and competition for Maupay and Connolly while also adding another dimension to the club’s attack with his pace and power.

Cunha has struggled at Leipzig this season and a move to the Premier League would be ideal for him to regain his confidence and start afresh. All in all, the Brazilian moving to the Amex in January might go a long way towards replacing the ageing Murray.
