Manchester United haven’t had a lot to celebrate about after their victory over Chelsea in the first game of the season but one positive has been Mason Greenwood’s debut goal against Astana in their first Europa League fixture of the season and there’s no doubt that the 17-year-old is the shining light of the Manchester United’s prestigious academy.
Greenwood has a very long way to go but if he can keep his head down and just stick to playing his football, he has the natural talent to become one of the club’s greatest prospects and Solskjaer is well aware of this fact and has tried to keep him away from the spotlight.
However, with Andreas Pereira playing on the right-wing in most games to no real effect, he might be forced to call upon the young Mancunian as there’s no doubt that he would be a far bigger threat than the Brazilian.
Solskjaer clearly wants to ease him into the side with one eye on the Europa League campaign and by giving him minutes in other cup competitions but if he continues to play the way he does, he might have to play the others in the Europa League and make him his starting player on the right-wing.
Greenwood would obviously prefer playing as the forward but his incredible ability with both-feet will make him a nightmare to defend against on that right-wing as he can go on the inside or the outside. This was on show in the game against Astana when he took his goal.
United have struggled for goals this season and while Arsenal is a big game, the Gunners have had a very leaky backline and United will have to be on the front foot from the first whistle in this game as the fans will demand a better performance after the horrific result against West Ham on the weekend and the end to end fixture that many will be expecting could be on show here.
There will also be a lot more space in such a fixture as Astana sat in their own box and Greenwood still managed to make a chance out of nothing. When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to sell Romelu Lukaku and loan out Alexis Sanchez, it was with this in mind. He needs to unleash him on the big stage now.
