Back in November 2017, the Daily Mail had claimed that Everton had scouted RB Leipzig left-back Marcel Halstenberg during a game between Germany and England at the Wembley Stadium.
Marcel Halstenberg, 28, joined RB Leipzig from FC St. Pauli back in 2015 and has since become a regular fixture at the back. He made 37 appearances across all competitions last term, scoring four goals.
The six-cap Germany international has hit the ground running in the new campaign with two goals and as many assists, helping RB Leipzig to the top of the Bundesliga table.
With the 28-year-old establishing himself as one of the most consistent left-backs in the Bundesliga over the last couple of seasons, Everton must plot a January swoop for the RB Leipzig star.
Duncan Ferguson acted as a caretaker manager for the Toffees but now, they have appointed Carlo Ancelotti. And one of the Italian tactician’s first and foremost jobs at Everton would be to shore up the backline.
The Toffees have lacked stability at the back this season. Yerry Mina and Michael Keane have struggled together at the back, with the latter failing to hit last season’s form. Even though Mason Holgate has been a breath of fresh air in the Toffees’ defence, they are in dire need of a central defender.
In addition, Everton also need a left-back, with Lucas Digne having struggled with injuries this season and Leighton Baines coming to the end of his career. That’s when signing Marcel Halstenberg would make sense.
Halstenberg has been one of Leipzig’s most consistent performers since their promotion in 2016/17, taking like a duck to water in the top flight.
The German loves to venture forward and create opportunities for his teammates in the final third. An excellent crosser of the ball, the 28-year-old is not only good going forward but also has the defensive nous to keep his opponents at bay.
In the video below, one can see Halstenberg’s style of play and the qualities he could bring to Everton if a deal goes through.
A set-piece specialist and a wonderful crosser, Halstenberg could be the perfect successor for Baines. Hence, signing the Leipzig star would be a smart move from Everton.
