Man Utd must pat themselves on the back for not signing this 20-year-old Italian talent – Here’s why

Why Manchester United were lucky not to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer

Gianluigi Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and broke into the AC Milan team a couple of years ago.

The 20-year-old Italian is a starter for the national team now and is one of the few consistent players for AC Milan.

The Italian has attracted interest from several top clubs over the years with Manchester United linked with the goalkeeper in the summer (h/t Sun).

Corriere dello Sport (h/t Sun) adds that AC Milan want to tie down Donnarumma to a new deal, but Mino Raiola has rejected the two-year offer.

United have been able to keep hold of David de Gea after the summer window, and in hindsight, it was great that they couldn’t land the Italian.

More drama is not needed at Old Trafford

Donnarumma could have been an excellent replacement for De Gea with the Italian eight years younger than the Spaniard.

However, the Italian has been a magnet for unwanted drama thanks to his agent Mino Raiola.

The super agent also has another client at Old Trafford, Paul Pogba, and the Frenchman has been linked with an exit from the club for a while (h/t Sun).

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is having a difficult time as it is and bringing another element into the dressing room could have had a negative effect.

Raiola is a disruptive influence for any team, and having several of his big clients in one dressing room is far from an ideal situation.

Donnarumma would have been under intense scrutiny too, had he joined, and United’s poor season could have made him an easy target.

Further, the Italian would need time to adjust to the league and also his teammates. United spent big to land Harry Maguire and developing the communication between him, Donnarumma and the other centre-back would have taken a while.

More Manchester United News

United did extremely well in keeping De Gea as he still is one of the best in the world. The Spaniard might have had an average season last time around, but no one can doubt his quality.

Verdict

Donnarumma would not have been a cheap signing in the summer had De Gea left, and it was for the best that United didn’t land the Italian.

The Red Devils have other problems to deal with and another Raiola client would have been a huge issue.
