Why Manchester United Shouldn’t Sign This Former Arsenal Midfielder

Manchester United have surprisingly been linked with former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Lassana Diarra. The French midfielder has enjoyed a new lease of life since moving to Marseille. A number of eye-catching displays this season have attracted admiring glances from across Europe.

Diarra’s impressive form earned him a recall to the French national side and he was voted Ligue 1’s player of the month for September. The 30-year-old played for his country in England’s 2-0 friendly win over France back in November just days after his cousin tragically passed away in the Paris attacks.

Diarra has also played for Portsmouth and Real Madrid during his career. He played a key role in the south coast club’s 2008 FA Cup win and his performances earned him a move to Real Madrid for £20m after just a year at Fratton Park.
Manchester United already have plenty of central midfielders in their squad. Last summer they signed Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich, the German captain has added much needed experience to this United team and he is a leader for whom many younger players look up to. Morgan Schneiderlin was signed from Southampton and he has had a solid first season for United. The Red Devils have a very good record when Schneiderlin starts and he has provided a solid base of midfield, helping to protect the defence and pick out long-range passes.
United also have other options in midfield. Ander Herrera can play in the number 10 position or central midfield. The Spaniard has been very effective since joining United, adding much needed flair to the team, creating chances and finding gaps in the oppositions defence. Michael Carrick is still a valuable member of the team at 34. The vice-captain adds much needed stability in form of the defence and can pick out exquisite passes.
Lassana Diarra is an experienced midfielder but United already have enough quality in the centre of midfield. Diarra would be a brilliant player for many Premier League clubs and his CV shows his talent. Crystal Palace have Diarra’s France international team-mate Yohan Cabaye in their squad and Diarra could be a good signing for them. He could create a well-oiled partnership with Cabaye and he would bring Premier League experience to Selhurst Park.
