Man United plotting a January swoop to sign this unsettled 25-year-old from Serie A would be a smart move

Why Manchester United should plot a January swoop for Emre Can

German midfielder Emre Can has revealed that he is “shocked and angry” after Maurizio Sarri left the midfielder out of Juventus’ Champions League squad.

Emre Can, 25, joined the Italian champions from Liverpool on a free transfer last summer and he made 37 appearances as the club lifted the Serie A title for the eighth season running.

However, the German international has been omitted from the 25-man group along with striker Mario Mandzukic and captain Giorgio Chiellini, who has been ruled out for up to six months after undergoing knee surgery.

This season the 25-year-old has fallen behind Sami Khedira and Blaise Matuidi in Maurizio Sarri’s pecking order, managing only one substitute appearance this season.

Considering Emre Can’s situation at Juventus, Manchester United, who were interested in signing him from Liverpool last year, must go for him when the transfer window reopens in January.

Manchester United did sign three players in the summer but none of them arrived as replacements for Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.

Failure to sign any central midfielders has left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side quite light in that department, with Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic, Andreas Pereira and Fred as the only options.

Pogba and McTominay have been Solskjaer’s preferred central midfield pairing this season, but they haven’t been consistent with their displays.

Pereira has been in and out of the team, while Matic apparently doesn’t quite suit the United manager’s high-pressing style of play. Fred is yet to be part of any matchday squads as he isn’t fully match-fit.

There is certainly room for a quality midfielder to come in and challenge Pogba and McTominay for a regular spot at Old Trafford. And Emre Can could be that player for United.

An imposing figure is preferred in English football with physicality in midfield a key component to the league. It’s an attribute Can has in spades as he’s more than capable of using his strength and aerial prowess to dominate the opposition in the middle of the park.

Aside from his impeccable work ethic, fine technical skills and a dominating presence, the German midfielder of Turkish descent loves to make late runs in the box and chip in with crucial goals.

The 25-year-old is a decent tackler and makes crucial interceptions for his teams.

Can is combative, tenacious and has the ability to drive with the ball before making an incisive pass. He could be an ideal player to slot with McTominay in the double-pivot, allowing Pogba to concentrate more on creating opportunities in the final third.

Plus, the midfielder’s previous Premier League experience with Liverpool could come handy for a youthful United side.

Verdict

Signing a former Liverpool player could be a little unpleasant for United fans but Can has the ability and experience to solve their club’s midfield problem.
