Why Manchester United should hand Tahith Chong a new contract
Manchester United have trimmed their squad massively and with the departures of Alexis Sanchez on loan and Romelu Lukaku on a permanent transfer, they’re clearly looking at cutting some of the wages from the club.
They look like they’re trusting their youth and are likely to hand Tahith Chong a new contract, according to the Daily Mail.
United might be thin now but trimming the squad had to be done at some point. The Red Devils have been run very poorly in the last couple of years, with the club keeping hold of the deadwood and plastering it with superstars.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is clearly trying to change that attitude and but the results haven’t been very good so far.
One can only assume that Tahith Chong is going to get a lot more minutes for his development in the cup competitions and in the Europa League because of Sanchez’s departure.
United have a bunch of very good attacking players emerging from the academy, with Chong being one of the brightest. After sorting out their defence, having a young attack will help them grow over time.
Chong is a 19-year-old forward with great pace, guile and energy. He can play on both wings but is most effective when he plays on the left to provide natural width like Ryan Giggs did in the past and Leroy Sane does now.
Old-fashioned wingers who go to the byline and whip crosses in are a rare breed today and Chong’s creativity from that side will be a real plus to this United side.
He’s also an absolute menace for defenders since he never stops harrying men on the ball – which is perfect for the pressing system that Solskjaer is trying to implement.
He’s also good at winning fouls and has been one of the standout players from the academy in recent years.
