Why Manchester United should go all out to sign Kai Havertz in January

According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are one of the top Premier League clubs interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen star, Kai Havertz.

Kai Havertz, 20, has emerged as one of Europe’s hottest prospects after successfully breaking into the first-team at Bayer Leverkusen. The 20-year-old midfielder scored 17 goals in the Bundesliga last term but has indicated that this could be his last season at the Bay Arena.

The German, already capped five times by Joachim Low, is thought to be happy at Leverkusen – but ready to move on next summer. He is contracted with Leverkusen until 2022, but there is a belief that the Bundesliga club are ready to cash in only if someone is willing to stump up an eye-watering £90million, adds the report.

Considering the current age and transfer market, that doesn’t seem too bad and is surely a fee Manchester United could afford to pay to significantly strengthen in what has been a problem position for them.

The Red Devils failed to bring in midfield replacements after losing Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera last season, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with only Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Fred, Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira. Solskjaer ended the summer a striker and midfielder short and that was plainly evident in the 2-0 defeat to West Ham.

The Norwegian tactician has been giving chances to the youth in the United team. Although, playing on Thursday night and Sundays would be tiring. This is why United should be looking to shuffle their midfield by bringing in new players in January and Kai Havertz would fit the bill.

A bright young talent, Havertz can play in various positions across the midfield as well as on the right flank. It’s his dribbling, fantastic first-touch, close control, his eye for goal and his ability to pick out a pass make him a special talent.

The German scored 20 goals and added 7 assists in all competitions last term, while also making a flying start to this campaign, too. Those stats partly tell one how influential he can be on the pitch.

Verdict

Technically blessed and tactically versatile, Havertz perfectly fits the profile of a player Solskjaer wants to bring in at Old Trafford. For a youngster, the Germany international’s potential is quite frightening and United must aim to lure Havertz to Old Trafford rather than see him go to one of their bitter rivals.
