Why Manchester United must splash the cash on this £87.5m star if he performs well in Russia

According to reports, Manchester United are interested in Lazio ace Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who is available for £87.5m.

Jose Mourinho has strengthened his midfield this summer after coming to an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Brazilian international Fred. Now, United want Milinkovic-Savic, who produced an impressive performance as Serbia defeated Costa Rica 1-0 in their opening match at the World Cup on Sunday.

Against Costa Rica, Milinkovic-Savic demonstrated exactly why he is regarded as such a unique and exciting talent. Aleksandar Kolarov did hog the limelight for his stunning free-kick, but Milinkovic-Savic showed flashes of brilliance to suggest why he is coveted by Europe’s elite clubs, including Manchester United.

Quick, nimble-footed, versatile and strong – the 23-year-old oozed class against Costa Rica. He was a constant menace for the Costa Rican defence with his strength and pace.

He also created some really good chances for striker Aleksandar Mitrovic and his teammates but Serbia ultimately got the winner through Kolarov’s sensational free-kick.

On Sunday, Milinkovic-Savic almost scored a great goal as he sneaked into the box and attempted an overhead-kick from close range; however, the linesman had raised the flag for offside and the shot was caught by goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

He was Serbia’s best player at the weekend as he drifted just behind Mitrovic and found pockets of space in front of the Costa Rican defence.

The 2017/18 Serie A season showed that Milinkovic-Savic belonged at the very highest level. For Lazio, he netted 14 goals and set up nine more in 48 appearances in all competitions.

Standing at 6ft 3in with a powerful frame, the 23-year-old is a master of taming high balls and regularly outfoxing opponents with twists and turns.

Milinkovic-Savic is a technically gifted player, who is adept at finding spaces in midfield. Apart from being blessed aerially, he is also creative and can constantly knit together his team’s attacking moves. Time and again the Serbian has shown he has the requisite balance in his game, which would allow him to compete at the very top level.

The Lazio star is an all-action midfielder. In Italy, Milinkovic-Savic has excelled as a central midfielder, while he has also been deployed in more advanced roles at times. He has the finesse and control to glide past defenders, and his versatility and work-ethic adds more value to his game.

These assets make him ideally suited to the English game. In fact, Milinkovic-Savic will suit United’s style of play and would be a perfect fit to partner Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.

Milinkovic-Savic’s performance in Serbia’s 1-0 win over Costa Rica was a true indicator of his talent and potential. It was a sign of many exciting things to come from him in the future. The Lazio ace is one of the most exciting players in the game just now.

So, Mourinho and United would be wise to sign him from Lazio quickly.
