Why Manchester United must avoid signing this top-class Dutch winger with 10 goals in 30 games

According to the Guardian, Manchester United are readying a summer move for Ajax starlet, Justin Kluivert.

Kluivert, the son of the former Barcelona and Netherlands centre-forward Patrick Kluivert, has been in superb form for Ajax this season, netting 10 goals in 30 games. He has been in contract negotiations with the Dutch club but it is understood that talks have broken down because of his demand to be the highest-paid player at the club.

The Dutchman’s current situation at Ajax has interested United, with Jose Mourinho being a huge admirer of the highly-rated young attacker.

At United right now, Mourinho has the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford as his options in the attack. That instantly eliminates the need for another striker, let alone a world-class one.

As far as the wingers are concerned, the team is blessed with experience, talent and variety. Anthony Martial started off very well but has somewhat faded in the second half of the season. The Frenchman’s game time has been hampered by the arrival of Sanchez from Arsenal, as the Chilean has directly slotted himself on the left-wing.

Alexis Sanchez

Marcus Rashford has also suffered heavily due to the arrival of Sanchez, although the academy striker has been involved in most of the games throughout the season.

Jesse Lingard’s brilliant season has made him a regular starter in the United team and the standout attribute is his ability to play in any position, including the wing.

Mourinho’s preferred formation is 4-2-3-1, in which Lukaku leads the line, with Lingard behind him, Sanchez on the left and Rashford or Mata on the right-wing. Martial, for all the talent and ability he possesses, isn’t effective on the right flank.

All the while, United have had their own issues on the right-wing. That was the big reason why Mourinho was interested in signing Ivan Perisic at the start of the season. United failed to get a deal done for Perisic but snatched Sanchez from Arsenal.

Sanchez has notably improved the Red Devils, giving them another dimension in the final third. The Chilean’s addition meant that United were complete in the attack, with Martial and Mata being rotated following the former Arsenal man’s arrival.

This clearly suggests that United do not need a winger this summer. In fact, Mourinho admitted in February that he won’t buy any attacking player at the end of the season after the arrival of Sanchez.

Justin Kluivert is one of the brilliant young attacking talents across Europe. He is destined for bigger things but currently, United should avoid signing him.
