Why Manchester City Should Shell Out £40million And Acquire Julian Weigl’s Services
Premier League champions-elect Manchester City have been harbouring an interest in Borussia Dortmund’s midfield sensation Julian Weigl for quite some time now and as per latest reports, the cash-rich club will have to shell out a transfer fee in the range of £40million to acquire his services in the summer.
The 22-year-old has been in exceptional form for the German giants and is deservedly regarded as one of the best in the Bundesliga as well. It is usually not easy to pry away promising youngsters from Dortmund and it remains to be seen if City succeed in doing that.

However, if they do, there is absolutely no doubt that it will prove to be a brilliant move by the club. City have been in excellent form throughout the season so far and are looking to win big this season. They already seem like they have the Premier League trophy under their belt and Pep Guardiola’s focus will be on securing other trophies as well.
After a season as successful as this one, there will be a lot of pressure on them to maintain the momentum next season too and to do that, a player like Weigl could prove to be the right choice.
As things stand, City have a solid attack. To be very honest, they might not need attacking players for a long time since they already have the likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva – all of whom can be rotated to fill the voids even if one them picks up an injury.
Of course, if one or two of them leave the club in the summer, Guardiola could be looking to replace them with fresh recruits but more than anything else, City are in dire need of a player like Weigl.

A brilliant holding midfielder by trade, Weigl embarked on his career with 1860 Munich and joined Dortmund in 2015. His effortless displays and influence helped him shoot to prominence and he is regarded as one of the best in the game for multiple reasons.
Despite being so young, Weigl can read the game quite maturely, which often leads to effective and quick decision-making on the field. Adept at playmaking and also at falling back to shield the defence, Weigl can do it all.
That does work in City’s favour since they will need a new defensive midfielder in the summer. Fernandinho has been brilliant this term but he is not getting any younger and they will need to find a long-term replacement for him. Meanwhile, Yaya Toure’s future continues to be uncertain, thus bringing up the need for a player like Weigl.
Fernandinho has been extremely influential for City this season and it only seems fitting to bring in the 22-year-old, who will undoubtedly add a lot of value to the club.
