7 goals, 13 assists – Man City would have bagged a massive coup by signing this 23-year-old Spanish gem

Why Manchester City should have signed Alex Grimaldo

Manchester City have proven themselves as one of the most dominant sides in Premier League history after accumulating 198 points in the last two seasons.

They also had a domestic treble to talk about last season, both of which are unprecedented achievements since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.

One of the harder things for teams that are so dominant is to figure out what areas need strengthening. There is no such thing as a perfect team but Pep Guardiola has fashioned a side that looks good in every department.

However, there has been one problem in the last two seasons for City but luckily for them, it’s not affected much and that is the left-back department.

Benjamin Mendy is a fantastic left-back but in his two years at the club, he hasn’t had a proper run in the side due to injuries and they can’t gamble on him to sustain his fitness any longer.

One player they were linked with – and should have signed – is Alex Grimaldo. Grimaldo is still only 23 and has a lot of years ahead of him.

Last season he registered 13  assists in all competitions with 7 goals, which is a fantastic return and more importantly stayed injury-free throughout the season with 54 appearances to boot.

The Spaniard has surprisingly not been bought by any club despite those incredible stats and he has all the tools to work perfectly for Pep Guardiola.

He’s a fantastic dribbler and glides across the flank with a deceptive turn of pace. He’s also got a fine cross on him as his stats suggest but he’s also got the added bonus of being incredible on set-pieces.

He started his career at Barcelona, playing for the B team and has all the attributes to play for a side that requires technical players like Pep’s Manchester City side.

He’s already gotten off the mark this season with a goal to his name and City should look to get some natural width back in the side without Mendy usually available and Leroy Sane injured for most of the season.

Grimaldo would be a fantastic singing and given them more attacking depth from the full-back areas, having already signed Joao Cancelo as well, who has similar attributes on the other flank. City have the money and they should’ve secured Grimaldo’s services.
