Why Manchester City over Manchester United Would Be A Better Destination For £50m-rated Jerome Boateng

Jerome Boateng of Bayern Munich has been hugely linked with a move out of Allianz Arena this summer, after failing to integrate himself into the Bayern lineup this season.

The German international has also been outshone by new signing Niklas Sule, who arrived at the club from TSG Hoffenheim last summer. Sule has been phenomenal in the centre-back position alongside Mats Hummels, who is arguably the best German defender at the moment.

Even though Boateng has been a key part of Bayern defence ever since he moved to the club back in 2011 but the German international could be available in the upcoming summer transfer window, with both the Manchester outfits heavily linked with a potential move for the £50m-rated defender.

According to sources, both the clubs are ready to battle it out for the signature of Jerome Boateng this summer but which club will be a better fit for Jerome?

Manchester United

Manchester United are in dire need of defender at the moment. Even though the Red Devils are currently the second-best defensive team in England, the largely mediocre performances of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have been totally unconvincing and it’s no surprise that both the English centre-backs have been hugely linked with a move out of Old Trafford this summer.

Therefore, Jose Mourinho is apparently looking for a someone to partner Eric Bailly in central defence. Jerome Boateng, in that regard, can be an ideal signing for the Red Devils considering his distinctive gameplay in the defensive department.

Known for his impressive passing-range, Boateng is someone who can add an extra dimension to Manchester United’s build-up play whilst further solidifying their defensive unit at the same time.

The German international is also quite an experienced defender, which will be useful as they look to perform well in the Champions League next season.

Manchester City

Premier League leaders Manchester City are also in the race to sign Jerome Boateng this summer, despite signing a plethora of star defenders last summer.

In hindsight, however, it does make sense considering Vincent Kompany’s constant injury issues, which keeps him out for the most part of a particular season, leaving Pep Guardiola with just three defensive options in the centre-back position.

The addition of Jerome Boateng will not only provide them with more options in the defensive department but his phenomenal qualities at the back will surely prove to be an upgrade to the likes of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.

In fact, Boateng himself might actually consider joining his former club, as he will be presented with the opportunity to reunite with former coach Pep Guardiola.

The Verdict

Both clubs are in dire need of someone like Jerome Boateng in their roster but Manchester City clearly are a better fit for this German international, considering the fact that Pep Guardiola was actually the one who transformed Boateng into a world-class defender.

The Catalan mastermind knows his game all too well and would be delighted to sign the defender next season. As for Manchester United, however, they should definitely target someone like Sokratis, who is more robust and better suited to Jose Mourinho’s tactical philosophy.
