Man City’s failure to sign a replacement for this modern-day veteran would cause them greater problems

Why Manchester City not signing a replacement for Kompany will hurt them

It was a difficult evening for Manchester City at Carrow Road as the Premier League champions were shocked 3-2 by Norwich City.

The Canaries harried the opposition as they continued by playing their expansive style of football. City should have been able to take the newly-promoted side apart but they made too many errors at the back.

Pep Guardiola

Aymeric Laporte is out for six months with a serious injury while Nicolas Otamendi, Kyle Walker and John Stones were awful at the back on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola could play Fernandinho at the back while Laporte returns from injury, however, one of the Spaniard’s decisions this summer will cost them big this season.

Lacking the experience of a leader

Otamendi might be one of the most experienced players in the Premier League, however, the Argentine isn’t a leader at the back.

Vincent Kompany decided to leave Manchester City this summer, however, Guardiola couldn’t sign a replacement for the former captain.

The Spaniard further claimed that he had “three incredible centre-backs” (h/t Independent) and the team decided to name David Silva as the captain for the season.

Vincent Kompany

Kompany had his injury problems last season and featured in only 17 Premier League games, however, the Belgian was one of the most experienced players out there and put up some quality performances.

The goal against Leicester City last season was the impact a captain makes, and that is something that Guardiola’s side will miss dearly now.

The centre-back wasn’t just a quality defender but someone who could get the team back on track if they conceded a goal or if things weren’t going their way.

The decision not to sign another defender will hurt City further when the Champions League and domestic cup games start, and it would be a major disaster if another centre-back picks up a serious problem.

Verdict

Guardiola has spent millions on adding quality to the City team but the decision not to sign another centre-back will hurt them this season.

The Spaniard is possibly the greatest manager in the game at the moment, however, even he can make a mistake or two.
