Why Man United signing this French World Cup winner would send out a huge message to their rivals

Why signing Raphael Varane would be a huge statement of intent from Man United

According to the Sun, Real Madrid stalwart Raphael Varane is the man who has been identified by Manchester United as the primary summer target as they look to strengthen what has been an extremely questionable defence line.

Raphael Varane is a French international who started the final of the recently concluded FIFA World Cup held in Russia. He played a key part in the final and made some very important blocks and interceptions to keep his team in the game against a talented Croatia side.

Currently a Real Madrid player, he has become a regular in the Los Blancos side and played crucial parts in all of the three consecutive Champions League winning seasons.

He has featured in 18 league games for Real Madrid this term and has even managed to contribute with a goal. He joined from French minnows Lens in July 2011 before he was gradually eased into the first-team picture at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Since his switch to the Spanish capital, he has prospered as a player and has won all of world football’s biggest prizes including the World Cup and the Champions League, all within the age of 25.

His amazing ability to read the play is the envy of many defenders across the globe and his superstar status means he would be perfect for Manchester United.

His movement and pace will make him an excellent option for United while his ability to pick out passes from the back could also be a huge asset. Also, the experience he brings in is unquestionable and his signing could be used as bait to bring in another top-quality centre-half.

United have been forced to depend on Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof to perform the defensive tasks but it is becoming clearer by the day that these aren’t players who are capable of winning a tournament like the Champions League or even the Premier League for that matter.

Raphael Varane’s addition to the United ranks would certainly be an incredible move for the Red Devils and it would send out a huge statement to their rivals. Varane would be a leader at the back and that is exactly what this Manchester United side is lacking.
