Man United’s long-term goalkeeping future would be in safe hands if they sign this prodigious 16-year-old gem

Why Man United should sign Coniah Boyce-Clarke as one for the future

According to The Sun, Man United have been credited with an interest in Reading goalkeeping prodigy, Coniah Boyce-Clarke, with the report claiming that the Red Devils are keeping a close eye on the teenager’s development.

The Sun understands that Boyce-Clarke has been on United’s radar ever since he impressed against their U-23 side at the age of just 15 last season.

The Red Devils sent scouts to monitor the 16-year-old’s development while playing for England U-17s in the Syrenka Cup in Poland and they have given positive reports to the club hierarchy regarding the youngster’s progress. (h/t Sun)

Boyce-Clarke was the hero between the sticks for the Young Lions in the penalty shootout, as England beat Poland in the final to claim the Syrenka Cup for the second time in a row.

A youth product of Reading, Coniah Boyce-Clarke made a number of appearances for the Royals’ U-18 and U-23 sides in the U-18 Premier League and the Premier League 2 Division 2 before signing a new deal at the Madejski Stadium, although he is yet to make the transition from the development ranks to the senior side.

However, with his stocks currently on the rise following his recent heroics for England U-17s and Man United keen to nab him away from Berkshire, Reading have a real fight on their hands to keep hold of one of their brightest emerging prospects.

Boyce-Clarke could be offered a clear pathway from the U-23 side to Jose Manuel Gomes’ senior team later in the season to convince him to stay put at the Madejski Stadium but a potential move to the Premier Leauge and, more importantly, to a club of Man United’s stature looks like an appealing prospect for the starlet, nevertheless.

To put things into perspective, Coniah Boyce-Clarke is yet to make the jump to senior men’s football but he looks like a player with the potential to go on any ply his trade at the highest level in the future.

With that in mind, Man United have every reason to look at the 16-year-old as someone who could possibly go on and make a name for himself in the years to come.

Reading, of course, will be well within their rights to demand a sizeable fee to part ways with their goalkeeping prodigy should United come knocking on the foot for his services, given that Boyce-Clarke recent penned a new deal with the club.

That, however, should not deter United’s interest in the teenager, as he has already made a strong start to his career at the youth level and looks like a goalkeeper who could make the transition to the senior ranks within the next four years.

The fans will be relieved after David de Gea finally decided to commit his future to the club, with the Spaniard putting pen to paper on a new deal after months of negotiations, claims and counterclaims.

De Gea is undoubtedly one of the best in the world and his recent slump in form is hardly enough to blemish his image as one of the firm fan favourites at Old Trafford.

Indeed, a new deal for him comes as a massive boost to United’s hopes of reinstating their status as one of the title contenders in the Premier League under Solskjaer in the years to come.
