Man Utd should not hesitate to beat Serie A giants and sign this prodigious 21-year-old Spaniard at the earliest

Why Man United should reignite their interest in Dani Olmo

According to the Calciomercato, AC Milan have now emerged as the favourites to sign Dinamo Zagreb starlet Dani Olmo, with the report suggesting that the Spanish prodigy favours a move to the San Siro.

The 21-year-old has been on Man United’s radar for quite some time now and The Sun reported back in August that the Red Devils had a bid worth £23.5 million for the youngster turned down by Dinamo Zagreb.

The same report revealed that Premier League clubs Wolves and Everton, as well as German heavyweights Bayern Munich, were also hot on his trail, although the Croatian outfit didn’t want to cash in on their prized asset.

Man United missed out on Olmo but they went on to enjoy a successful summer transfer window, with the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James coming through the door as a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s youthful squad overhaul, while Harry Maguire stole the limelight as one of the club’s biggest marquee signings in the recent era.

The Red Devils, though, have struggled to hit top gear in the opening stages of the Premier League season and while all the new signings have made a positive impression with their performances early in the campaign, the lack of a top-quality playmaker has emerged as one of the key talking points at Old Trafford.

Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira don’t look as if they have the quality and the temperament to start each and every game for a club of United’s stature, while Juan Mata has apparently lost a lot of his sharpness and flair due to his advancing years.

To that end, Man United desperately need to bring in a versatile attacking midfielder in January who can create space, pull the strings and support the strikers in the final third to add that much-needed creative spark to a side that has struggled to carve out too many clear-cut chances in the opening stages of the season.

Putting things into perspective, Dani Olmo, who is regarded as one of the hottest youth prospects in Europe at the moment, fits the bill perfectly at Old Trafford and Man United need to show the urgency and the ambition to get themselves back in the race to sign the 21-year-old, given that AC Milan are apparently in the driver’s seat at the moment.

A technically-gifted attacking midfielder capable of operating in a No.10 role and on either flank as a creative winger, the Spaniard not only has the innate ability to create space with his nimble footwork but he also has the vision and the guile to set up goals with defence-splitting passes.

Add to that his high levels of footballing intelligence and it is not difficult to see why he is one of the most sought-after young talents in Europe.

The 21-year-old ran riot with a superb display in Dinamo Zagreb’s 4-0 victory over Atalanta on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League, registering a pass success rate of 86.1, including 4 tackles and 9 successful dribbles, figures which speak volumes of his ability to deliver the goods at the highest level.

AC Milan have the pulling power to attract any top-quality talent across the globe and Man United should make an arduous effort to ensure that they do not lose out in the race to sign one of the most exciting youth prospects in Europe.

Olmo has been tipped for stardom and, with United laying a lot of emphasis on building a team around talented youngsters, it should be a no-brainer for them to go back in the market for the 21-year-old in January.
