Man United would get a perfect attacker for the future by signing this Premier League star in the summer – opinion

Manchester United Opinion: Should the Red Devils go for Gerard Deulofeu?

Manchester United looked all set for a disastrous campaign under Jose Mourinho but club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned things around since taking charge as the interim manager, with the Red Devils managing 11 wins from their last 13 games across all competitions under the stewardship of the Norwegian.

As a result of their recent resurgence, United currently sit 4th in the standings and have got themselves back in the race for a top-four finish.

United chose not to invest in any new players in the January transfer window, with Solskjaer managing to extract the best out of the existing set of players.

Solskjaer’s arrival has seen United adopt a more direct philosophy, which has brought the best out of players like Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford.

However, the Red Devils are in need of some investment to bolster their squad if they plan to continue with Solskjaer at the helm of affairs beyond the end of the current season.

To be more precise, United should not hesitate to get Romelu Lukaku off their books next summer as the Belgian is a glaring misfit for Solskjaer’s philosophy which demands fast and agile strikers who are capable of making subtle runs behind the opposition’s backline.

As evident from the games so far, Lukaku has struggled to produce his best form and a physical forward like him, who is more suited to playing as a target man up front, is unlikely to make much of an impact under Solskjaer. Hence, United should dip into the transfer window next summer to sign a more mobile forward.

The Red Devils should make an audacious swoop for Watford’s Gerard Deulofeu. The Spaniard has shown plenty of promise in the Premier League this term, accumulating 6 goals and 4 assists to keep the Hornets in the race for a Europa League qualification spot.

Deulofeu missed the first few games of the season due to an injury but the former Barcelona man has really turned it on in recent weeks. The 24-year-old netted a hat-trick in Watford’s latest 5-1 triumph over Cardiff City.

Known for his technical abilities and tactical intelligence, Deulofeu is capable of playing on either wing, as an attacking midfielder and also as a forward in a two-man attack.

Besides possessing blistering pace, exceptional close control, silky dribbling skills and obvious quality on the ball, one of Deulofeu’s greatest strengths is his movement off the ball, which keeps the defenders on their toes throughout the game.

The Spaniard not only has the ability to make subtle runs in behind the opposition’s defence but he also likes to move the ball quickly, which should make him a better fit for Solskjaer’s style of play.

Rashford and Lingard have thrived under Solskjaer and someone like Deulofeu certainly fits the bill. Furthermore, he has the composure to beat the goalkeeper in one-on-one situations and can be devastating in counter-attacking situations.

Deulofeu has shown plenty of promise this season and it is only a matter of time before any of the top clubs across Europe make an attempt to lure the Spaniard away from Vicarage Road. Hence, United should take the first initiative and table a bid for the 24-year-old next summer.
