Why Man United beating Chelsea to sign 20-year-old Serie A hotshot could be a masterstroke by Mourinho

Why Manchester United must beat Chelsea to sign Federico Chiesa in January

According to the Sun, Chelsea are leading the race to sign Fiorentina star Federico Chiesa and could make a move for him in January.

Chiesa, 20, is rated as one of Italy’s brightest young prospects and he has started this Serie A season well, scoring two goals and assisting once in eight games. The youngster’s performances since last season have not gone unnoticed as Manchester United also remain interested in the Italian international, as per the Sun.

Chelsea have made a great start to the season and are currently unbeaten under new manager Mauricio Sarri. The Blues are flying in the Premier League at the moment as Sarri has made his team play a possession-based, attacking style of football.

While Chelsea have laid down an early marker in the Premier League, Manchester United have endured a torrid start to the 2018/19 campaign.

After finishing second to cross-town rivals and champions Manchester City last term, Jose Mourinho’s side were expected to mount a serious title challenge this time around but things have been so negative for the Red Devils so far.

United managed to sign just three players in the summer transfer window in contrast to their rivals who spent heavily to strengthen their squads. Inability to get deals done in the summer has affected the club’s season dearly and looking at the current scenario of the team, the board must back Mourinho financially when the transfer window reopens.

Come January, United must beat Chelsea to the signature of Federico Chiesa. Sarri will find it difficult to accommodate Chiesa in his first-team plans since Chelsea already have top quality wingers in their ranks. Since Chelsea are heavily stocked in the wide areas, United must try luring Chiesa away to Old Trafford.

Predominantly a right winger, Chiesa is equally adept at playing on the left, in the No.10 role and as a secondary striker too. He is quick, agile and industrious, which make him a quintessential Mourinho player. The 20-year-old also has a lot of tricks up his sleeves and is a two-footed player blessed with a solid technique and sublime body balance.

Even though United have Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez, they need a natural winger to fill the right flank. And Chiesa would fit the bill perfectly at Old Trafford as his ability to deliver inch-perfect crosses into the box would help Romelu Lukaku score goals at a consistent rate.

Given the attributes Chiesa possesses, he would inject some freshness and pace into United’s attacking ranks.

Thus, Mourinho should rival Chelsea and go all out to sign Chiesa in January.
