Why Man City should snap up Florinel Coman as a long-term prospect
The 21-year-old, who scored twice to guide Romania U21s to a 4-2 victory over England at the 2019 U21 UEFA European Championship earlier in the summer, has also attracted interest from Premier League rivals West Ham. Italian giants Roma are also keeping close tabs on the youngster’s progress. (h/t Daily Mail)
A product of the famous Gheorghe Hagi Academy back in his homeland, Florinel Coman embarked on his professional career with Vitorul Constanta in the 2014-15 campaign.
After playing a bit-part role in his first couple of seasons at the senior level, Coman shot to prominence with a number of eye-catching displays as a teenager during the 2016-17 campaign. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength.
Having established himself as one of the hottest emerging prospects in Romania at Vitorul Constanta, Coman was snapped up by giants Steaua Bucharesti in 2017.
The youngster has already graduated to the senior international level for Romania and recently made his debut against the Faroe Islands. The 21-year-old boasts of a stellar record of 24 goals and 21 assists in 87 appearances for FCSB across all competitions, including 8 goals and 5 assists in 19 appearances this term.
Noted for his pace, agility, sharpness, dribbling and technical abilities as a winger, Coman’s rapid evolution into one of the best young players in his homeland has earned him comparisons with French World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe.
To put things into perspective, Florinel Coman would be yet another fantastic addition to the existing pool of up and coming starlets at the Etihad.
With Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Leroy Sane vying for a place in the starting XI, the Citizens have some of the most highly-rated wide players in Europe.
However, Coman could prove to be an excellent long-term investment for the reigning Premier League champions.
Also, with Bayern Munich keeping a close eye on Sane’s unresolved contract situation at City (h/t Metro) and Mahrez yet to establish himself as a regular fixture in Guardiola’s XI, opportunities could well present themselves for a promising youngster like Coman.
It remains to be seen whether the 21-year-old is ready to make the step up to the Premier League.
City have some good wide players like Jack Harrison, Ian Poveda, Marlos Moreno and Patrick Roberts but neither of them seems to be a part of Guardiola’s plans moving forward. In fact, Coman would also need to wait patiently for opportunities if he were to move to the Etihad.
