Explained: The reason why Man City must fight interest from German giants and retain this £27m powerhouse

Why Man City should keep hold of Gabriel Jesus amidst Bayern interest

According to a report from the Sun, Bayern Munich are interested in signing Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus.

Gabriel Jesus, 22, joined Manchester City from Palmeiras for £27m back in 2016 and struck his 50th goal in the 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. He also starred in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, which sent City back to the second spot.

Despite the Brazilian international signing a new contract at the Etihad Stadium, Bayern are keen on Jesus. It’s claimed that manager Pep Guardiola views him as the long-term successor to Sergio Aguero and that City will tell Bayern the striker is not for sale. Although, the report adds that City will ask for £100million to even consider a deal.

Guardiola prefers Sergio Aguero over Jesus and so far Aguero’s consistency and goal-scoring record have forced the City boss to continue with the Argentinean as the first-choice striker.

Regarded as one of the best strikers in the world, Aguero has 241 goals in all competitions for City and is perfectly suited to Guardiola’s system.

Even at the age of 31, the 5ft 8in marksman is showing no signs of stopping and shattering records week in and week out.

The Argentinean international may have had some injury problems over the last few years but he remains Guardiola’s undisputed first-choice striker for now. Where does that leave Jesus, who has started only four league games this season?

Jesus is one of Europe’s exciting young strikers but he has had to play second-fiddle to Aguero at Man City. Aged just 22, the Brazilian forward has quickly stormed to 50 goals in City colours.

Barring Sunday’s Aston Villa game, all of his City starts this season have come away from home. That speaks volumes about Guardiola’s confidence in Jesus and his goalscoring ability.

With 50 goals in 110 games across all competitions, Jesus is certainly proving his worth and Guardiola would have been delighted with the Brazilian’s contribution and attitude – both on the pitch and off it.

Injuries may have played some part in the 22-year-old’s career at City but he has fought hard to overcome those and has now become one of the most potent goalscorers in the Premier League.

Verdict

At the age of 22, Jesus has a long way to go and Guardiola would simply be the right manager to unlock his potential.

Even if Bayern are ready to break the bank for him, City must not entertain any offers as the Brazilian striker is one of City’s valuable long-term assets. He is undoubtedly Aguero’s long-term natural heir.
