Man City parting ways with their talented speedster would take them multiple steps backwards – agreed?

Why Man City should avoid parting ways with Gabriel Jesus

According to the Sun, Man City were prepared to offer Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus to Bayern Munich in the summer in a bid to ward off interest in Leroy Sane.

The Bundesliga giants were on the lookout for reinforcements in the wide attacking areas to cope with the departure of legendary wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery and Man City stalwart Sane was identified as a player in the same mould. (h/t Sun)

City, though, were in no mood to part ways with the German international amidst interest from Bayern and the reigning Premier League champions slapped a mammoth £130million price tag on the winger to ward off interest.

Bayern, unsurprisingly, weren’t prepared to pay that kind of money for Sane and as the report suggests, Man City were prepared to offer Gabriel Jesus for a fee of £90million in a bid to put an end to the transfer saga.

The Bavarian giants, however, were intent on signing a pacey winger to replace the likes of Robben and Ribery and they opted against going forward with a deal, given an out-and-out centre-forward like Jesus didn’t really fit the profile of players they were looking for in the market.

And with Sane suffering a long-term anterior cruciate ligament injury in the Community Shield clash against Liverpool, Bayern were forced to drop their interest in the German international and instead, they ended up signing Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic on loan deals from Barcelona and Inter Milan respectively.

As the report suggests, the Bavarian giants are likely to go back in the market for Sane’s services when he recovers fully from his long-term injury and it will be interesting to see whether or not Man City manage to repel interest from the Bundesliga champions once again, particularly with Sane’s contract set to expire in the summer of 2021.

To put things into perspective, Man City’s desperate attempt to hold on to Sane makes perfect sense given his telling contribution in the club’s back-to-back Premier League triumphs, however, using Gabriel Jesus as a scapegoat doesn’t look like the best course of action.

The 22-year-old, though not a regular starter under Pep Guardiola, is central to City’s plans moving forward and has what it takes to be the ideal long-term successor to the throne of Sergio Aguero at the Etihad.

Just to remind the fans, Jesus was viewed as a successor to Aguero in the longer run when Man City splashed £27million to snap him up from Palmeiras in 2016.

To that end, Jesus has done everything that Guardiola has asked of him thus far. The Brazilian boasts of a tally of 49 goals and 17 assists in 108 appearances for the Citizens in all competitions, numbers which are truly sensational given that he has largely been forced to play second-fiddle to Aguero and has often been limited to cameos off the bench.

The 22-year-old has already proven his credentials at the highest level and he is only going to get better with time, so it would be a real shame for City to lose his services at this stage of his career after putting in all the hard work to mould him into a top-class striker.

The job of grooming him into the ideal long-term successor to Aguero is nearly done and parting ways with him would definitely be a step backwards as far as the champions are concerned.

As for Jesus, a move to Bayern Munich would put him in a similar situation where he is likely to have a tough time displacing Robert Lewandowski.

On the contrary, Sane heading for the exit door next summer would be beneficial for both parties if he doesn’t sign a new deal with City. The Citizens would not want to lose him for free in 18 months’ time if he really does have his heart set on a move elsewhere.

Suffice to say, Man City parting ways with Gabriel Jesus could come back to bite them badly in the future and they should not put his future in jeopardy irrespective of what the future holds for Sane.
