Newcastle’s goalscoring woes would vanish with the arrival of this 23-goal African ace

Why Macauley Bonne would be a perfect signing for Newcastle United

According to talkSPORT (h/t LeicestershireLive), Newcastle United are interested in Charlton Athletic striker Macauley Bonne.

Premier League rivals Leicester City and Championship promotion-chasers Fulham are also considering a move for the Zimbabwean striker but the Magpies are ahead of other English teams (talkSPORT h/t LeicestershireLive).

Bonne, 24, came through the ranks of Colchester United’s youth system and came under the spotlight last year with Leyton Orient. He fired Orient to promotion back into the Football league last season with his 23 goals. This earned him a move to the Championship with Charlton Athletic.

Though he initially struggled for game time at The Valley, Bonne has done well so far this term by scoring 6 goals in the 15 games he has featured for Charlton. After over 200 appearances in the lower leagues, it might be the right time for him to step into Premier League.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce’s men are sitting at a decent 11th position. The Magpies’ consistency on the field has been fluctuating and have found it hard to keep themselves moving constantly.

Earlier, they had won against good teams like Manchester United and Bournemouth but have done poorly against promoted side Aston Villa. They played with confidence against Manchester City too but their performances have not been consistent.

One area where the Newcastle boss has found it difficult to improve is the centre-forward position. Joelinton has just scored one goal so far in the Premier League.

Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto have not been a proper backup for the Brazilian. Andy Carroll has had his problems with a bruised hip that has left him on the sidelines without action.

Macauley Bonne would be a better option for the Magpies as they enter into the more competitive festive period. Steve Bruce must ponder upon making Bonne a member of his squad as he can be a proper goalscorer.

The 24-year-old has been an integral member of Lee Bowyer’s squad of late. Though Charlton are placed low in the Championship table, Bonne has been their top scorer.

Predominantly a striker, the Ipswich-born Zimbabwean can also showcase his talents on the flank. At Newcastle, he would be a useful option from the bench.

Verdict

Bonne has the ability to make his mark in England’s top flight after a successful time with Leyton and Charlton.

Therefore, Steve Bruce must make sure they beat off competition from other sides who are also vying for his signature. This would help both Newcastle and Bonne, who needs the opportunity to make it to the Premier League.
