Leeds signing this 27-year-old Sheffield United outcast would be a sign of relief for Bielsa

Why Luke Freeman would be a smart signing for Leeds United

According to the Sun (h/t The Daily Star), Leeds United are eyeing a January swoop for Sheffield United attacker Luke Freeman.

Luke Freeman, 27, arrived at Sheffield United after a solid campaign with Queens Park Rangers last summer but he’s struggled to establish himself as a Premier League player. He has made 9 appearances, failing to grab a goal so far.

The 27-year-old started a couple of games when John Fleck missed out through injury earlier in the season but has since struggled to get into the starting XI. He did start the game at Brighton a few weeks ago, however, he was withdrawn after just 53 minutes at the Amex stadium.

Now, Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa is keen to bolster his squad and wants Freeman, the report adds. (h/t The Daily Star)

Bielsa’s side are at the top of the Championship table after 26 games but on goal difference. Jack Clarke and Eddie Nketiah have both been recalled by their parent clubs, leaving Leeds short in the attack.

Nketiah’s loan spell at Elland Road was cut short and that leaves them with Patrick Bamford as the only recognized centre-forward in the team. Thus, Bielsa should prioritize signing a striker to act as Bamford’s back-up.

In addition, the Leeds boss should also address the problems persisting in the final third of the pitch. With both Pablo Hernandez and Tyler Roberts suffering injury issues this season, the league leaders should bolster their creative options in January by signing Luke Freeman.

Freeman was a consistent performer for QPR last season, chipping in with 8 goals and 6 assists in 43 Championship appearances. He is a proven performer in the Championship and that should potentially help him adapt to Leeds’ style of play under Bielsa.

The 27-year-old can play out wide and also behind the striker and would slot really nicely into that midfield alongside Mateusz Klich.

In terms of Bielsa’s high-press and intensity, Freeman would be a perfect fit. He’s also versatile, meaning Bielsa could use him in different positions as per the game’s needs. The former England under-17 international would offer goals and assists in equal measure to the Whites.

Verdict

Leeds are in need of beefing up their attacking unit this window in order to ensure there is enough depth for a playoff push, and signing a proven player like Freeman would be a statement of intent.
