Why Mourinho’s decision on this immense 19-year-old Tottenham talent is the right move

Why loaning out young Skipp would be a good move by Tottenham

According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham coach Jose Mourinho is considering a loan move for promising midfielder Oliver Skipp.

The 19-year-old joins youngster Japhet Tangana on the list of talented youngsters who could leave the Lilywhites on loan in the January transfer window, the report added.

Unlike his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino, Mourinho wants to give potential talents an opportunity to prove themselves, the report claims.

Former Spurs boss Pochettino had earlier blocked all loan deals for his side’s best young talents as he felt it would be more beneficial if they worked and developed their game with his own staff.

The Argentine’s policy was not entirely successful as it had its own pros and cons. Harry Winks was one of the key beneficiaries from this setup, who has now established a spot for himself in the Tottenham squad.

Meanwhile, talented right-back Kyle Walker-Peters has struggled for game time and has stagnated over time.

The Portuguese has a different stance on this matter and prefers to send them someplace new. This has seen many including young Skipp being chosen for newer challenges somewhere else.

Having made 8 appearances last season under Pochettino, Skipp has seen himself fall down the Spurs pecking order, having made just 5 appearances overall this season.

The arrival of Tanguy Ndombele and Real Betis loanee Giovani Lo Celso has further limited the youngster’s chances of claiming a spot at least on the bench.

Since appearing in Tottenham’s first two league games against Aston Villa and Manchester City, the youngster finally got an opportunity recently in the final 10 minutes of the game against Burnley under new boss Mourinho.

With opportunities clearly hard to come by given the squad’s depth in midfield at the moment, a move elsewhere would be immensely beneficial for the young midfielder.

There is no doubt regarding Skipp’s talent, with the youngster being handed his England under-21 debut recently in October. Since then, he has played three times for the national side.

Predominantly a defensive midfielder, Skipp could also be deployed anywhere in the middle of the park. His defensive capabilities have seen him don the centre-back’s role during his younger days at the Tottenham academy.

Overall, he has made 17 appearances for the Tottenham senior side in a period of two years and has assisted twice. This shows huge potential and is something the club has to nurture to secure a promising future for the player and for themselves.

Verdict

With the squad looking completely filled at the moment, it would be better if Skipp is sent on loan to some other club.

Having proven his talent already, Skipp is somebody to be treasured by Tottenham and giving him more game time will only benefit them in the long run.

Hence, it would indeed be a good decision if Mourinho loans out the youngster and helps him develop as a footballer.
