According to a report by ESPN, Jurgen Klopp has signed a new contract with Premier League leaders Liverpool until 2024.
The German manager, who led Liverpool to their sixth European title last May, had previously signed a six-year contract with the Anfield club in 2016.
Having achieved great heights since arriving in 2015, Liverpool’s decision to renew Klopp’s deal comes as a major statement.
Klopp, who has previously managed clubs such as Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, was brought to England after his eye-catching accomplishments.
During his stint in Germany, Klopp had won accolades for winning the German title consecutively with Borussia Dortmund (2010-11 and 2011-12). He also led them to the Champions League final in 2012-13, which they ultimately lost to arch-rivals Bayern Munich.
After arriving at Anfield, Klopp’s debut season (2015-16) was not the best as the club finished 8th in the league. However, he soon proved his credentials by securing a Champions League spot the next season by finishing 4th in the table.
Since then, the club have experienced unprecedented growth in terms of results compared to their previous campaigns. Under Klopp’s guidance, Liverpool reached their first-ever Champions League final since 2007, eventually losing out to defending champions Real Madrid.
However, fortune favours the brave and Klopp finally achieved the unthinkable by guiding Liverpool to a Champions League title last season, overcoming North London side Tottenham Hotspur.
Klopp’s arrival has effectively changed the face of a club that did not win aby major trophies since last winning the Champions League in 2005.
Klopp, who has committed his next five years at the Merseyside club, will become the club’s longest-serving manager since Bob Paisley by the end of his new contract.
The German opted to extend his stay in order to oversee a gradual rebuilding of the team, according to The Guardian. His arrival has also helped the Reds make significant progress not just on the pitch but also off it.
Liverpool recently unveiled plans to construct a new Anfield Road stand that would increase the stadium’s capacity to more than 61,000. The club are also planning to build a new £50million training complex in Kirkby, which would be completed by the summer of 2020, the report adds.
Hence, Liverpool offering a new deal to Klopp, who brought in such drastic changes at such short notice, does not come as a surprise and is the right decision.
