Why Liverpool would be absolutely foolish to beat Tottenham for this £42m hotshot

Why Liverpool signing Memphis Depay would be a senseless move

According to Calciomercato (h/t The Mirror), Liverpool have been linked with Lyon star Memphis Depay, who is also a target for Tottenham. He would cost around £42m.

Depay has been enjoying life in France since he moved from Manchester United, where he had a disastrous spell. In 10 Ligue 1 appearances this season, the winger has scored 7 goals and has 1 assist to his name.

While he is known to be a goal machine for Lyon, Depay has also become an integral member of Ronald Koeman’s Dutch squad. He was instrumental in their run to the UEFA Nations League final.

Coming through the ranks of PSV Eindhoven’s youth ranks, Depay gained attention when Manchester United bought the star in 2015. He could not emulate his match-winning displays at Old Trafford.

His spell in England became a nightmare and eventually, he switched to Lyon. He looks to have revived his star status in France and Liverpool have shown interest in him now, along with other European teams, according to The Mirror.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are enjoying a successful run of spell under Jurgen Klopp, the mastermind of the club’s transformation. He also led them brilliantly to achieve European glory last season and Liverpool have once again become heavyweights in Europe.

The Reds are clearly leading the race for the Premier League title, 8 points clear of second-placed Leicester City. If Liverpool happen to win the league at the end of this season, it would be their first in 19 years and Klopp would be looking to make no errors en route Premier League glory.

In regard to this, Liverpool already have a bunch of established stars who can play at the highest level, and making a move for Memphis Depay would not be ideal at this point.

Klopp has three world-class forwards – Sadio mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah at his disposal. They have worked hard under Klopp and seem to have no competition for their respective positions in the team.

Whereas, Divock Origi has been instrumental for the Reds whenever he has come off the bench. His noticeable display came against Barcelona in the semi-finals of Champions League last season, in which he scored the winner from a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner kick.

It is clearly understood that Depay’s move to Anfield would only put him to bench once again, whereas he needs to be starting regularly at the peak of his career.

With a plethora of midfield talents at Liverpool, Depay would find it hard to play as an attacking midfielder, to which he has been accustomed to at times.

If Liverpool are to got into the transfer market to add depth to their squad, they must move for a player younger than Depay, who would be able to play second fiddle to their forward line.

Therefore, it would be wise if Liverpool keep their eyes away from Depay, who would rather benefit by joining a team where he can start regularly.
