Liverpool signing this 27-year-old star is the perfect way to protect a key position next season – Klopp must do this

Liverpool opinion: Should the Reds sign Jiri Pavlenka?

According to reports in the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool are chasing Werder Bremen’s Jiri Pavlenka. The report suggests Werder Bremen have dismissed the possibility of selling goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka for the time being.

Alisson Becker has had a memorable season and will go down as the best goalkeeper this season. He will need an able deputy if he gets injured. Simon Mignolet has spent many years at the club but is not of the standard required and is surplus to requirements now.

The report adds that a potential swap deal for Loris Karius was even considered but Werder Bremen sporting director Frank Bauman has dismissed the possibility of the Czech Republic international leaving the club.

The 27-year-old’s current contract with the Bremen runs until 2021. The 27-year-old began his career at Banik Ostrava in 2012, spending three and a half seasons at the club before joining Slavia Prague in January 2016.

Pavlenka has since made 77 appearances for Werder Bremen. After an impressive first season for Florian Kohfeldt’s side, he signed a new contract last summer. He’s also a Czech Republic international and has represented the national team 9 times.

The German club are demanding even more though as a swap alone won’t make the deal a possibility. Karius is halfway through a two-year loan spell at Besiktas but hasn’t impressed enough.

Karius had a torrid time at Liverpool. There was always room for improvement but the killer blow came in the 2017/2018 Champions League final when he committed two howlers to gift Real Madrid the prestigious trophy.

That was the last straw for Jurgen Klopp after having defended him many times and the German was sent out on a two-year loan spell to Turkish side Besiktas last summer.

Conclusion

Liverpool should cut their losses and look at seriously bolstering their squad. They can no longer look at mediocrity and be fine with it as they had been for so many years in the past.

They should now be looking at going to toe-to-toe with Manchester City in the league and defend their Champions League title. They are at the peak of their powers and should dominate the coming years.
