Why Liverpool should renew interest in Ben Godfrey
Liverpool have had one of the strongest backlines since Virgil van Dijk joined the club some 20 months ago.
There was a lot of criticism directed towards Jurgen Klopp’s inability to organize a defence but with the Dutchman, Alisson Becker and Fabinho, they look like a completely different outfit now.
However, Liverpool haven’t been as assured this season. It didn’t cost them much till mid-week, where some defensive errors led to their first loss of the season against Napoli, who beat them at the same stage last season.
Klopp has favoured the partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip for most of 2019, as Joe Gomez continues to be plagued by injuries and Dejan Lovren has never been very reliable. Lovren was linked with an exit all summer, however, it didn’t take place.
One player Liverpool were linked with – and would have been a great partner for van Dijk – is Norwich City’s Ben Godfrey. The England U-21 international has been quite impressive along with Norwich’s flying full-backs so far this season.
Godfrey was one of the best centre-backs in the Championship last season and he hasn’t disappointed in the Premier League either. Norwich depend heavily on him for their build-up play, as Godfrey is fantastic with the ball at his feet and he was also used in a holding midfield role by Daniel Farke for this reason.
He’s also a fantastic athlete, who is very good in the air and has the pace to recover while playing in a high-line for the Canaries and will be a requirement at Liverpool.
He can also learn a lot while playing alongside Virgil van Dijk, who is considered the best defender in the world right now.

This will be a great education for him and Liverpool’s charge for trophies will also help him generate a mentality that is required of a top player.
It would also help his chances in the England side with John Stones having a poor run of form.
Liverpool should definitely look at Godfrey as he’d be another very smart piece of business.
