Why Liverpool should plot a January swoop for Lucas Alario

Liverpool beat Sheffield United 1-0 at Bramall Lane on Saturday, as the Reds won their 16th consecutive Premier League game. Georginio Wijnaldum’s effort crept through the hands of Blades goalkeeper Dean Henderson to seal the win, while Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both missed big chances.

This now means that Jurgen Klopp has become just the second manager ever to guide his side to seven straight wins at the start of a season, with Jose Mourinho being the other. It’ll definitely be interesting to see if Liverpool can win their next three games and set a new Premier League record.

The Reds won the Champions League last season and look on course for more silverware this campaign, with a settled squad full of world-class talent.

They, of course, have arguably the best attack in Europe in their ranks but Jurgen Klopp needs to manage the workload of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino effectively.

While Divock Origi signed a new contract earlier this year and has a future at Anfield, Klopp should be wise enough to know that he needs to sign another forward that can add a clinical edge to his already excellent attack.

With that in mind, Liverpool should make a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Lucas Alario in January.

Lucas Alario, 26, who was linked to Liverpool a couple of years ago, joined Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2017 from River Plate. He managed nine goals and three assists in 27 Bundesliga appearances last season. The Argentinean hasn’t enjoyed a great start to the new campaign, though.

In Alario, Liverpool would get a very hardworking, intelligent striker who is good in the air and can terrorise defences with his movement in and around the box.

He is not only adept at making space for himself in the final third with his ball control and movement but he is equally proficient in getting into right positions to put chances away.

A good header of the ball, adept at bringing others into the game with his smart hold-up play and tireless worker off the ball, the Argentina international would provide a reliable option from the bench as a possible replacement for Firmino.

He’d give the Brazilian a rest if the side are leading and, thanks to his intelligent link-up play, he could also prove vital as a second striker if the team need a goal.

Verdict

This lack of quality and nous up front has been the constant worry for Klopp since Daniel Sturridge and Dominic Solanke departed the club.

Alario has the required qualities to thrive in the Premier League and the Merseysiders have every reason to look at him as an attractive long-term investment.
