Liverpool opinion – Klopp should offload Dejan Lovren amidst Serie A interest

According to a report in the Sun, Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren is being chased by three clubs in the Serie A for a swoop in the summer transfer window.

The 29-year-old is on the wishlist of Napoli, AS Roma and AC Milan. There are suggestions that around £25million could be enough to lure the Croatian international away from Anfield (h/t Sun).

Lovren hasn’t featured for Liverpool since suffering a hamstring injury against Wolves in the FA Cup on 7th January.

The ex-Southampton man hasn’t been the first-choice centre-back this season when everyone was fit. It is because Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk were doing exceptionally well before the former got injured.

Dejan Lovren

Hence, Jurgen Klopp might be lured to agree on a deal with one of the Italian clubs and let Lovren leave in the summer. Here’s why the German would be right to do that:

The Croat has been inconsistent performance and fitness wise

Since arriving at Liverpool back in 2014, Dejan Lovren has shown enough signs of promise as a centre-back, but his inconsistency is something that hasn’t improved in all these years.

We have to come expect three to four good performances from him, which then gets followed by a hapless one. Hence, as a manager, you cannot trust the Croatian international to do a job over the course of a season and become the spine of a team of the stature of Liverpool.

Furthermore, Lovren hasn’t been consistent in terms of remaining fit as well. His injury record is as erratic as his performances at times. Thus, he cannot be banked upon to play, let’s say, 15 games in a row.

In fact, it is a record that the 29-year-old hasn’t played 10 consecutive first-team games in his time at Liverpool. That sums it up!

Conclusion

It is pretty clear that the Reds won’t be wrong in letting go of Lovren in the summer. They can get some money to spend, probably to buy another centre-back who can be good for the club.
