Why Liverpool should make a move for Edinson Cavani in January

According to a report from the Sun, Edinson Cavani is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Uruguayan international, 32, joined PSG from Napoli for £55million in 2013. He has scored 195 goals in 282 games for the Ligue 1 champions, winning five titles, four French cups, five league cups and four Champions trophies in the process.

However, Edinson Cavani has been hit by injuries this season, making just three appearances in all competitions so far. He has been sidelined by a hip injury recently and remains a doubt for Friday’s Ligue 1 match with Nice.

Cavani is out-of-contract at PSG next summer and now aged 32, he is unlikely to command a substantial transfer fee in January. That being said, Liverpool should look for a bargain January swoop for the Uruguay striker.

Liverpool are yet to taste defeat in the Premier League this season having maintained a 100 per cent start. They are attempting to equal a Premier League record of consecutive wins if they can stretch it to 18 against Manchester United.

After winning the Champions League last season, Jurgen Klopp will have his eyes set on breaking the club’s Premier League title drought. The German tactician has an excellent squad, filled with experienced players and young talents.

His team possesses arguably the best attack in European football, with the trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino capable of wreaking havoc against any team.

Nevertheless, Liverpool lack a quality back-up striker for Firmino, who is one of the most important players in Klopp’s system.

Divock Origi is a good option and proved crucial for the Reds in some games last season but he cannot be completely relied upon to lead the line with regularity should Firmino get injured. That’s when the signing of Edinson Cavani makes sense.

Cavani, who was once a target for Liverpool back in 2014, would be a fantastic addition to Klopp’s attacking ranks. He is an accomplished goal-getter and has proven his worth at the top level for many years.

The 32-year-old is a poacher in front of the opposition goal and has a knack for being at the right place at the right time.

Aerially strong with intelligent movement and ability to hold the ball up in tight areas, the Uruguayan would provide Liverpool with a different dimension to their attack. Cavani is quite hard-working as well and often looks to put pressure on the opposing ball-carrying defenders.

Verdict

Cavani has the physical and aerial prowess that could help him thrive in the Premier League. And at the ripe age of 32, he can a smart short-term investment for Liverpool.
