Liverpool must do the right thing and offer this veteran first-team star a new contract at the earliest

Why Liverpool should hand James Milner a new contract

According to a report from the Metro, Liverpool are set to hand versatile midfielder James Milner a new deal.

The former England international, 33, will be out of contract at the end of the season and free to speak to other clubs in January when he can sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs.

He has been a fantastic servant to the Reds since his move from Manchester City on a free transfer back in 2015 having amassed 181 appearances in his four years at Anfield.

The report claims it is likely Liverpool will offer James Milner a one-year extension on his current terms.

James Milner has developed a reputation for being a model professional and despite his advancing years, he featured in 45 of Liverpool’s matches last season including the Champions League final.

He made 31 starts for the Reds in all competitions last term. The 33-year-old is highly reliable and extremely versatile as he has played in a number of positions such as on the wing, in midfield and at full-back.

The Englishman is a leader on and off the pitch, a senior figure who is held in high regards by his Liverpool teammates. He knows what it takes to lift the trophy and is the only player in the entire Reds squad to have tasted Premier League success.

Milner has, by no means, set the world alight but he has performed admirably and given his everything whenever he has been on the pitch for Jurgen Klopp’s side. His penalty-taking ability is just one of the many other qualities he brings to the Merseysiders.

In fact, during the 2017/18 season, the 33-year-old recorded a Champions League-best tally of 10 assists in one campaign.

The versatile customer is an asset to Liverpool, both on and off the pitch. He is a true professional with experience of the highest order and even at the ripe age of 33, he still has years left in him due to his fitness, lean build and hard work.

The ex-Leeds United man is still going strong and such an experienced professional needs to be kept for a club that are challenging for trophies.

Verdict

For Klopp, it would make perfect sense to renew Milner’s contract as he is always willing to put in the kind of shift others just aren’t.

The veteran midfielder is a true role model whose influence on and off the pitch will be crucial for the Reds in the next couple of years.
