Why Liverpool Should Do Business With Chelsea To Bring This Veteran To Anfield

Liverpool are in the market for a left back as both of their current left backs have proved inadequate. While Jose Enrique has been sidelined for a very long period of the season due to an injury, their loanee from Valencia Aly Cissokho has not had the effect that Rodgers thought he would have. In this scenario, Brendan Rodgers is in the market looking for a viable option and he has identified a few targets.

But one target may be right next to him as Chelsea player Ashley Cole is set to part company with the club in search of a new home after his eight year association with the club. The former Arsenal player may not be a long term solution, but for Liverpool he might be the ideal man at this stage.

Liverpool move into this transfer window with a pledge to strengthen their squad and put up a good fight in the Champions League next season. With that in mind, they have to pick up player who can solve their defensive midfield crisis and relieve Gerrard of his duties in the holding role. Also they must bring in players to break the deadlock when necessary, something they have failed to do this season. These transfers must cost Liverpool a hefty sum of money and getting such a world class left back as a free agent could be a jackpot for Liverpool.

The 33 year old may not be in the prime of his game at the moment, but he surely knows his business when it comes to defending. His pace has been compromised and so has been his attacking instincts. But there are still areas in the game where he is parallel to none and can change the complexion of a match almost single handedly.

The world cup qualifiers where he put a decent show validates the fact that he can still play at the top level for a couple of years more and perform to the fullest of his capabilities. Cole has got the winning spirit in him and if he joins Liverpool, would be one of the few players who has tasted success both in and out of London. He has been instrumental in Chelsea’s winning campaigns of the Premier League and the Champions League and he can share his thoughts and lead the defence from the front. He has also had a remarkable international career, capping 107 times for his nation.

It is true that Liverpool would need a replacement and a permanent solution to the left back position sooner than later, but Ashley Cole could be the ideal man in the time between. After Liverpool brought in Kolo Toure last season, Cole could be their budget buy this season.

Many can warn the managers that Kolo Toure’s inclusion in the squad did not help Liverpool in too many ways, in fact he can be credited with giving away two points for his error, but still Toure has provided the leadership off the field.

Cole is also in the same mould and Liverpool would be fortunate to get his services for a couple of seasons.
