Why Liverpool over Manchester City would be a better destination for this £95m PL attacker

Riyad Mahrez

Liverpool or Manchester City – Where should Riyad Mahrez go?

Riyad Mahrez was linked with a £95m move to Manchester City for the longest time but if latest reports are to be believed, Liverpool are also keen on making a move for him. Mahrez played a pivotal role in helping the Foxes win the Premier League in what was a miraculous run of form and he has been subjected to quite a lot of attention since then. While he does seem like a solid prospect, which club should the Algerian attacker join?

Straight off the bat, it must be noted that both teams are not in desperate need of a player like him. Liverpool and City have had the best attack forces this season and for both clubs, Mahrez is likely to be surplus to requirements. However, the player himself is understood to be keen on exiting Leicester to play Champions League football and having him in the ranks would certainly help Liverpool and Man City boost their squad depth.

Pep Guardiola has absolutely no shortage of attackers right now. The likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva have all been in spectacular form this season and even if one of them picks up an injury, the others can be deployed temporarily to fill the void.

It is a luxury, of sorts, and having so many excellent attackers has definitely played a major role in their campaign this time. At present, they are the league leaders by quite a big margin and are all set to be crowned as the Premier League champions.

Liverpool, on the other hand, do not have as many celebrated attackers as Man City. They have solely relied on Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to take charge of the wings. Back when Mane got injured, it was Philippe Coutinho who filled his void and deputised as a winger but now with him gone, the Reds could be in jeopardy if either one of their wide attackers were to pick up an injury.

Considering all that, it makes more sense for Mahrez to join Liverpool over City. The Algerian is a force to be reckoned with and he could add so much value to the current Anfield side. Hence, given a choice, Jurgen Klopp must do everything he can to sign Mahrez. The player will definitely not come cheap but given the lack of depth in that area for Liverpool, having a player like Mahrez could truly make a difference.
