Why Liverpool Over Arsenal Would Be A Better Destination For Thomas Lemar

As per a report from Independent, AS Monaco vice-president has admitted that the club are open to offers for Thomas Lemar.

The report has also claimed that Arsenal and Liverpool are both equally keen on acquiring his services and have been targetting him for almost a year now. The talented attacker rose to prominence after a splendid season with Monaco last term – which also saw the French club emerge as Ligue 1 champions.

Since then, Lemar’s performances appear to have taken a nose dive and it would make sense for Monaco to cash in on him this summer. However, given a choice between the two Premier League powerhouses, where should the 22-year-old go?

Lemar essayed a crucial part in propelling Monaco to glory last season. He displayed superior skills of pace and creativity, coupled with a solid sense of defensive awareness as well. He is still quite young, meaning he will prove to be a long-term buy.

Furthermore, he is known to be quite consistent and hard-working, meaning he should be able to adjust to the Premier League’s style of play fairly easily. Based on his style of play, it makes more sense for him to choose Liverpool instead of Arsenal.

Make no mistake; Arsenal are in need of a new midfielder but Lemar might not thrive in the kind of setup Arsene Wenger has established at the Emirates Stadium. On the flipside, Jurgen Klopp always prefers players who can cover the distances with ease.

Given Lemar’s pace and physicality, that should be no problem for him. In addition to that, rapid movement in the final third is quite important for Klopp and Lemar is known to make effective decisions in high-pressure situations.

Although the Reds seem like they do not miss Philippe Coutinho’s creativity, they will need a solid replacement for him next term. Hence, a move for Lemar could prove to be extremely beneficial.

To further illustrate the point, let’s take a look at their rate of chance creation. As per Squawka, Coutinho has created 23 chances in 12 La Liga games for Barcelona whereas Lemar has created 45 chances in 25 Ligue 1 games for Monaco.

Roughly, it comes down to 2 chances created per game (approx.). In the grand scheme of things, Lemar could prove to be the ideal replacement for Coutinho, thus making a strong case for the club to purchase him.
