Why Liverpool must go all out to land Leicester’s English hero shining at the World Cup

Why Liverpool must sign Leicester’s English hero Harry Maguire

Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson has asked Jurgen Klopp to splash the cash on Leicester City’s England centre-back Harry Maguire this summer.

Maguire, 25, has impressed for England at the World Cup this summer, helping the Three Lions to a semi-final clash vs Croatia. The giant centre-back scored a beauty against Sweden to put England through.

Klopp has already added some real quality to his side this summer in the shape of midfield duo Naby Keita and Fabinho but he is yet to bring defensive reinforcements which are a must going into the next season.

The Reds are still searching a centre-back to partner the world’s most expensive defender, Virgil van Dijk. After England’s quarter-final win over Colombia in the World Cup, it would be safe to say Maguire could be the real deal for Liverpool.

Harry Maguire

Not only has Maguire impressed in the ongoing World Cup but his performances with Leicester City this past season have been solid too. When Hull City got relegated from the Premier League a couple of years ago, Maguire emerged as one of the very few shining lights and was quickly snapped up by Leicester the following season.

Now with his stellar displays at the heart of England’s defence at the World Cup, Maguire has seen his stock rise. The way he has been consistently performing at such a high level on the biggest stage won’t leave one off-guard if the big sharks come circling this summer.

Without any second thoughts, Liverpool should be the first to take a note of Maguire’s meteoric rise. The 25-year-old has proven his class since joining the Foxes from Hull last year and he is now considered as a first-team regular in Gareth Southgate’s England side. He has improved leaps and bounds over the past two years and he is now considered as one of the Premier League’s finest central defenders.

Maguire is a big and strong, old-fashioned centre-back but with solid composure on the ball. Aerially imposing and quick along the ground, the English centre-half loves to maraud forward with the ball through the centre of the park before making a quick, incisive pass. The former Sheffield United man is so confident on the ball that he never hesitates to play out from the back.

Harry Maguire

Due to his height and physicality, Maguire is often unbeatable when it comes to aerial duels and he remains a constant threat for the opposition during set-pieces, just like how he was against Sweden. Also, he is a very good reader of the game, which allows him to make crucial blocks and interceptions.

The Reds have an exciting attack but their actual problem lies at the other end of the pitch. And to plug the holes in the defence, Klopp should bring Maguire to Anfield. Due to his attributes, Maguire would be an excellent addition to the Liverpool squad and the perfect centre-back partner for Van Dijk.

Klopp signing Maguire from Leicester would surely improve Liverpool’s squad and help his team close the gap on Premier League champions Manchester City.
