Liverpool must act on this 24-year-old Ligue 1 star’s desire and consider future move

Why Liverpool must consider signing Maignan in future

While talking to Canal Football Club via Get French Football News (h/t Liverpool Echo), Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan admitted that he would like to play for Liverpool in the future.

The 24-year old Lille custodian did not hide his admiration for the European Champions, saying that he would fancy featuring for them (Get French Football News h/t Liverpool Echo).

Maignan has been excellent for Lille ever since he moved from French giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the summer of 2015.

The Frenchman, who is one of the first names on the Cristophe Galtier-led Lille outfit, has started all their 19 league matches so far and has 7 clean sheets to his name.

Maignan seems to have continued his form from the last season where he was voted Goalkeeper of the Year due to his eye-catching displays between the sticks, which helped Lille finish an impressive second behind PSG.

He was second in the list of goalkeepers with the most number of clean sheets in the league last season and kept an overall 17 clean sheets which earned him the goalkeeping honours for the previous year.

After spending his first two seasons at Lille mostly on the benches, Maignan suddenly rose to prominence in the 2017-18 season, when then-manager Marcelo Bielsa opted to start him over the experienced Vincent Enyeama.

Maignan has never had to look back since then, guarding the Lille goalposts with aplomb and establishing himself as one of the team’s regulars. The Lille custodian has made a total of 120 appearances and has conceded 147 goals and kept 36 clean sheets to date.

With attractive track record such as his, it is no doubt Maignan would be a great addition to a top club such as Liverpool if they are in need of established shot-stopper in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Alisson Becker, who was adjudged the best goalkeeper in the Premier League lasts season with impressive figures of 21 clean sheets.

Apart from Alisson, Liverpool have two more keepers in veteran Adrian and youngster Caoimhín Kelleher. Though Adrian has tons of experience playing at the highest level, he is clearly not one of the best and is Jurgen Klopp’s second-choice.

The Cork-born Kelleher, meanwhile, is an academy graduate, who still has a lot to learn. So far, he has made just three appearances this season, all of which have come in the Carabao Cup.

However, he has conceded 10 goals already which shows he still has to grow up before establishing himself in the big scene.

Verdict

Maignan has been playing in the top division for the last couple of seasons and is not short of experience when it comes to playing at the highest level.

Hence, the Reds should consider him as an option for the future and sign him sooner rather than later.
