Liverpool have worked wonders by securing a new deal for this 28-goal academy gem despite Bobby Duncan’s exit

Why Liverpool have struck gold with a new deal for academy starlet Paul Glatzel

As confirmed via Liverpool’s official website, Liverpool academy star Paul Glatzel has signed a new long-term deal with the Reds, as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury suffered during the club’s pre-season friendlies.

The 18-year-old fired a staggering 28 goals in all competitions for Liverpool’s U-18 side in the 2018-19 campaign and his prolific form earned him a place in Jurgen Klopp’s senior team for the pre-season fixtures.

However, the youngster injured his knee against Tranmere Rovers on July 11 and he is currently going through various rehabilitation procedures at Melwood to work himself back to full fitness.

Glatzel, who is widely regarded as one of the most prized assets in Liverpool’s youth ranks, was instrumental in the Reds’ FA Youth Cup victory last season and also made his debut for the club’s U-23 development side.

The 18-year-old bagged as many as 8 goals over the course of Liverpool’s triumphant FA Youth Cup campaign last season and scored the winning penalty in the penalty-shootout victory over Man City in the finals.

Born in Liverpool to parents of German heritage, Glatzel is already a prolific marksman at the youth and reserve level at Anfield and has been labelled by the youth coaches as a player with the potential to go on and play at the highest level.

Essentially a No.9 by trade, the 18-year-old has showcased the versatility to play as an out-and-out striker as the spearhead of the attack and also in a No.10 role just off the front man. Glatzel has also represented both Germany and England at U-16 levels due to his dual nationality.

To put things into perspective, the new deal for Paul Glatzel is likely to be welcomed with a lot of optimism by the Liverpool fans, especially after what happened with Bobby Duncan earlier in the summer.

Duncan, who was touted as one of the brightest academy talents at Anfield, departed for Fiorentina before the deadline and the club hierarchy should be relieved to have secured the long-term future of Glatzel after such a big loss.

Liverpool need to keep hold of their top youth prospects in order to ensure a continuous inflow of quality talents into the senior team from the academy, with Trent Alexander-Arnold being a prime example of someone who has successfully made the transition to top-level football in recent times.

Glatzel, too, has the talent and the potential to carve out a big reputation for himself at Anfield in the years to come and it hardly requires a professional analyst to figure out that the Reds have taken a step in the right direction by tying him down to a new long-term contract.
