Get him Gerrard – This 20-year-old bright prospect would be a perfect fit for Rangers

Why Lewis Ferguson would be a fantastic signing for Rangers

According to The Scottish Sun, Aberdeen star Lewis Ferguson has emerged as a target for Old Firm giants Rangers heading into the January transfer window, with the Gers setting their sights on the talented youngster as a potential replacement for Glen Kamara.

Kamara, who arrived at Ibrox from Dundee United for a thrifty fee of £50,000 back in January, has proven himself to be a massive bargain for Steven Gerrard, with the ex-Arsenal star establishing himself as one of the mainstays of the club’s midfield over the past nine months.

The 24-year-old Finnish international’s consistently impressive displays, as well as his heroics in Rangers’ recent 2-0 victory over Porto in the Europa League, haven’t eluded the eyes of some of the English clubs, and Gerrard is already bracing himself for offers when the transfer window reopens in January. As per the report, Glen Kamara has been scouted extensively by Championship duo Fulham and Leeds United in recent weeks, while Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion have also been credited with an interest in the influential central midfielder.

With that in mind, newly-appointed Sporting Director, Ross Wilson, who switched Southampton for Ibrox, has already earmarked Aberdeen starlet Lewis Ferguson as a potential replacement for Kamara. (h/t Scottish Sun)

The 20-year-old is widely regarded as one of the brightest emerging prospects in Scottish football and despite the midfielder recently putting pen to paper on fresh terms at the Pittodrie until 2024, the Gers are more than willing to pursue an interest in his services.

Interestingly, Lewis Ferguson does have some hereditary ties with Ibrox, given that his uncle Barry Ferguson and father Derek Ferguson are pretty much considered as legends by the Rangers faithful. Hence, a potential move to Rangers for the highly-rated midfielder would certainly be a nice story for the Ferguson family.

A youth exponent of Hamilton Academical, Lewis Ferguson has progressed by leaps and bounds since his move to the Dons from his boyhood club back in 2018 and there is enough reason as to why he is held in such high regard by manager Derek McInnes.

The 20-year-old made an instant impact at the Pittodrie Stadium with 8 goals and 8 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions for Aberdeen last season, with his winner against Rangers in the 2018 Scottish League Cup semi-final the highlight of his impressive debut season.

Ferguson has once again hit the ground running this term, scoring twice and setting up another five in 18 appearances for the Dons, and his rapid progress has put him on the radar of Rangers.

In Joe Aribo, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield, Andy Halliday and Ryan Jack, Gerrard has a strong midfield cavalry at his disposal, but Kamara’s potential departure would certainly leave a massive hole in the ranks, given that the 24-year-old has been one of the key driving forces behind Rangers’ success in recent times.

Returns of 10 goals and 13 assists in 62 appearances for Aberdeen suggest that Lewis Ferguson is a handy all-round central midfielder with a good eye for goal.

Verdict

The Scottish U-21 international has been earmarked as a player with serious potential and has already made significant strides towards fulfilling his promise under the watchful eyes of McInnes.

To that end, the 20-year-old certainly looks like an exciting prospect for Rangers and while he might not be able to provide the same kind of balance in the middle of the park as Kamara right from the word go, there is every chance that the starlet could possibly work wonders for the Gers in the coming years with a bit more polishing from Gerrard.

That said, it should be a no-brainer for Rangers to make an approach for the Aberdeen sensation if Kamara heads for the exit door in the near future.
