Leicester letting go of their promising £19m prospect would be a huge blunder and Rodgers must avoid it at all costs

Leicester City opinion: Should the Foxes keep or offload Caglar Soyuncu?

According to a report from Leicestershire Live, Turkish giants Fenerbahce are interested to take Leicester City’s summer recruit Caglar Soyuncu on loan in the summer. The 22-year-old joined the Foxes in the summer from Freiburg for £19million but has failed to impress so far this season.

Soyuncu has struggled for game time this campaign, having featured just 5 times for the Foxes in the Premier League so far. The Turk, despite playing under 300 minutes of football this season so far, is a fantastic defender and Leicester would be making a huge mistake if they let him go.

Brendan Rodgers’ undisputed first-choice in central defence, Harry Maguire, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United. If the Foxes lose their star centre-back, they would be left with just Jonny Evans and Wes Morgan in the heart of the defence.

Evans has done a decent job for the foxes all season but turned 31 in January. Wes Morgan, despite extending his contract with the club recently, will not last the season at 35 years of age.

Leicester will have no back-up if they let Soyuncu go and could potentially get in trouble if any of their defenders picks up an injury or suspension.

Soyuncu was a star during his time in the Bundesliga with Freiburg and was touted to be one of the best in the business before he made his switch last summer. The 22-year-old’s aggressive style of defending massively suites the Premier League and he deserves a chance to play under Rodgers.

However, Soyuncu is highly inexperienced at such a young age and with very little game time for the Foxes, a loan move makes sense. But a return to Turkey will prove to be of very little use for him and Leicester, with the Super Lig’s quality being highly inferior to the Premier League.

Conclusion

Leicester should refuse to let the 22-year old return to his homeland, especially with the Turkish club looking for more than just a loan deal in the future.

Soyuncu, if not given a chance with Leicester, should be loaned to a Premier League club or to the Bundesliga where game time against top players will help him.
