According to Leicester Mercury, Leicester City want to sign a central defender. After selling defensive ace Harry Maguire this summer to Manchester United, the Foxes failed in their attempts to bring in a replacement.
However, Brendan Rodgers remains intent on signing a central defender with Wes Morgan in the twilight of his career and his future at the club beyond this season in doubt.
The report claims that Leicester City could look at Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car, Benfica star Ruben Dias and Real Sociedad’s Diego Llorente in a bid to fill the void left by Maguire.
Earlier in September too, Leicester Mercury claimed that Caleta-Car could have been the player who’d have been scouted by Leicester City.
Speaking about Duje Caleta-Car, the 23-year-old joined Marseille from RB Salzburg last summer. He had an ordinary debut season with Marseille, managing just 20 Ligue 1 appearances. However, the Croat has hit the ground running this campaign, starting 7 games in the league out of 12.
Standing at 6ft 4in, Caleta-Car is a powerhouse inside his own box and can lead his backline with authority and conviction.
The 23-year-old has been a defensive rock for Marseille inside his own half as evidenced by his average of 1.3 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 3.9 clearances and 0.4 blocks per game in the Ligue 1 so far this season. [Courtesy: WhoScored.com]
Caleta-Car is a promising young centre-back which explains why Leicester would benefit by signing him. It remains to be seen whether or not Leicester attempt to sign him in January.
Caglar Soyuncu has stepped up this season following Maguire’s departure, forging a strong partnership with Jonny Evans at the back. However, one shouldn’t forget that Evans has entered his 30s as well.
Thus, signing Caleta-Car makes sense and Leicester must surely test Marseille’s resistance in January. The Foxes can have one of the most robust defences in the Premier League if they can find a way to pair Soyuncu up with Caleta-Car in the coming years.
