Leicester City going all out to sign this seasoned 28-year-old winger would sharpen Rodgers’ attack massively

Why Leicester City should go all out for Andros Townsend in January

Back in June, the Daily Mirror had claimed that Leicester City were eyeing a summer swoop for Crystal Palace winger, Andros Townsend. However, no deal materialised and the Englishman stayed put at Crystal Palace.

Andros Townsend, 28, enjoyed a solid last campaign at Selhurst Park as Palace finished the Premier League season in 12th place. He has scored 14 goals in 129 appearances across all competitions during his time with the Eagles.

With the former England international at the peak of his powers and having just two years left on his contract at Selhurst Park, Leicester should revive interest in their summer target during the mid-season trading period.

Leicester have made a bright start to the new Premier League campaign and are expected to break into the top six this time around. Brendan Rodgers has built an exciting squad that has the potential of achieving bigger things this campaign.

In Jamie Vardy, James Maddison, Youri Tielemans, Ayoze Perez, Harvey Barnes and Dennis Praet, etc. the Foxes have one of the most thrilling attacks in the division. And Rodgers’ side showed a later of character and fight at the weekend when they came from a goal down to win 2-1 against Tottenham at the King Power Stadium.

While the Midlands club aren’t exactly in need of an attacker at the moment, there’s no harm in signing a player who’ll truly add quality as well as depth to the squad.

In Andros Townsend, Rodgers would get a skilful, pacey and creative winger who’ll be an upgrade over Marc Albrighton.

An excellent dribbler of the ball, the Englishman’s ability to carry the ball forward for his team even under pressure before making an incisive pass in the final third makes him an exciting player for any ambitious Premier League side.

The former Tottenham man has succeeded in adding some levels of consistency to his game in the last 12-15 months. His end product has improved as well as the ability to find his player in the box with his deliveries.

Plus, one cannot question Townsend’s ability to strike the ball from distance as well, with the 28-year-old scoring an outrageous volley in the 3-2 shock victory over Manchester City at the Etihad last season.

Verdict

Yes, it’s true, he doesn’t score enough goals, and he’s not particularly strong on the ball, but Townsend has now volumes of Premier League experience and enjoying the best years of his career.

He is a seasoned Premier League professional and brings so much more than what he offers on the pitch. Thus, the 28-year-old just seems the right fit for Rodgers’ Leicester.
