Why Leeds United would be smart to Rob Green on a short-term deal
In an interview with Football Insider (h/t The Lancashire Post), former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has indicated that the Yorkshire outfit could go after goalkeeper Rob Green after Kiko Casilla was charged by the FA for the use of abusive language.
Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has been charged for using racist and insulting words towards Charlton’s Jonathan Leko during the Whites’ loss at The Valley. The goalkeeper has denied those charges and he has until November 12th to formally respond to charges.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side are flying high in the Sky Bet Championship at the moment and much of that success has been built on the backbone of eight clean sheets from Casilla, who has been ever-present this season for the Whites.
As things stand, if the Spanish shot-stopper isn’t able to defend himself, then he could be facing a minimum ban of six matches as per the rules introduced for the 2019/20 season.
If Casilla is found guilty and gets suspended as a result, Bielsa will be left with two rookie goalkeepers in his ranks. French youngster Illan Meslier is currently the second choice for Leeds and he’ll likely deputise in goal in the absence of Casilla. Apart from Meslier, Kamil Miazek is another alternative for Bielsa.
Both Meslier and Miazek are untested at the highest level and that could be concerning for Bielsa as his side are challenging for automatic promotion this season. That being said, should Leeds go for Rob Green on a short-term deal?
Bielsa could have a real selection dilemma on his hands with Casilla potentially facing up to six games of absence through suspension. Thus, without any second thoughts, Leeds must bring in Rob Green, who retired in May after a season at Chelsea. He spent the 2016/17 season at Elland Road after signing on a free transfer from QPR.

The 39-year-old goalkeeper has tons of Championship experience and he would be an excellent short-term signing for Leeds. Green may not be match-fit after announcing his retirement in May but there’s no doubt he could be an inspired addition to the promotion-chasing Leeds side.
Verdict
If Casilla is banned for six games, Bielsa should consider signing Green on a free transfer until the end of the season.
