Why Leeds United should sign Dwight Gayle in January

According to a report in Birmingham Live, Leeds United are tipped to sign Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle during the January transfer window by their legend Noel Whelan.

The 29-year-old, who was on loan at West Brom for the whole of last season in the Championship, has returned to his parent club in hopes of getting playing time under Steve Bruce.

However, the calf injury he picked up during pre-season has kept him out of action so far. He is back to fitness now but is not getting the minutes on the pitch.

Gayle has a terrific record in the Championship, which was reinstated when he scored 24 goals in 40 league appearances last season for the Baggies. He is yet to make the cut in the Premier League though.

Here’s why Championship favourites Leeds should sign him during the January window:

Gayle’s Championship record demands Leeds to sign him

Dwight Gayle is a prodigious player, who possesses an incredible record in the Championship. With 59 goals and 16 assists in 100 appearances in English second-tier football, he demands respect from most teams around the circuit.

The 29-year-old hasn’t made the cut in the Premier League but he is still a good enough player to harness impact in the Championship.

In terms of his attributes, Gayle likes to play on the shoulder of the last defender. He also possesses enough pace to stretch defenders and is a strong finisher in and around the opposition box.

On the other hand, Leeds United have made a decent start to the season but they need more up front to support Patrick Bamford. The sale of Kemar Roofe hasn’t helped the cause.

Seeing Gayle’s history and record in the Championship, Marcelo Bielsa’s men should sign him sooner rather than later.

Leeds must sign Dwight Gayle in January. It would be a move that suits both parties.
