Why Leeds United Must Sign Keiren Westwood Despite Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s Brilliant Form

As per a report from The Sun, Leeds United are interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiran Westwood this summer. The fact that Leeds are in need of a new shot-stopper is no secret and according to The Sun, Westwood is one of the names on their list of targets.

At 33 years of age, the Wednesday keeper boasts of ample experience and knowledge to make a difference but should the club sign him despite Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s brilliant form?

When it comes to the young Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Leeds have a promising youngster with the potential to become a force to reckon with in the future. Although his initial performances have been promising enough, he is quite young and is still developing.

Westwood’s addition would provide some much-needed competition for Peacock-Farrell while also improving Leeds’ chances on the whole. Westwood is regarded as one of the best keepers in the Championship and after a season filled with struggles, the club needs a player like him for next season.

Furthermore, Westwood could act as a mentor for the 21-year-old since he knows the Championship better than most of the players. He is quite reliable but he cannot go on to become a long-term option for the club.

However, for the time being, Westwood could challenge Peacock-Farrell for the starting spot while also bringing in his leadership skills and technical knowledge to a club that is clearly in need of all the help they can get.

One might wonder where that would leave Felix Wiedwald but after what we have seen, it would be a smart move to offload him this summer. He was the undisputed No.1 when this season commenced but then a slew of disappointing performances prompted Thomas Christiansen to deploy Andy Lonergan instead.

Wiedwald did make a return after that but his performances continued to disappoint. That’s when Peacock-Farrell stepped up to the fore and he has been a regular for the club ever since.

However, due to a significant lack of experience, it might be a good move for the Elland Road outfit to sign Westwood.

Despite showing signs of initial promise, Leeds’ hopes of a promotion have derailed terribly. It is important for them to try again next season but to do that, they need to sort out their goalkeeping woes. Signing Westwood is unlikely to affect Peacock-Farrell’s role since he is the future but will the Wednesday star’s age prove to be an issue? Only time will tell.
