Why Leeds Can Benefit By Signing Costel Pantilimon This Summer

Leeds United have endured a rather forgettable season this time. From putting in a slew of impressive displays under Thomas Christiansen to crashing miserably towards the end of last year, one might think that the Whites have faced their share of ups and downs in the ongoing campaign.

However, even with Paul Heckingbottom’s appointment, Leeds have failed to make a strong impact and are currently placed 12th in the Championship standings.

Although they are capable of surviving this term, there are a number of changes that need to happen in order for them to truly prosper. The club are facing an acute shortage of quality personnel in quite a few areas but more than anything else, it is imperative that they land a new goalkeeper this summer.

Currently, Heckingbottom has the likes of Felix Wiedwald and Bailey Peacock-Farrell at hand but the former has been unimpressive while the latter is far too inexperienced to play regularly.

Furthermore, Andy Lonergan has been a long-term absentee due to a neck injury and this paints a worrisome picture for Leeds. If they are to win the Championship title or at least fight for promotion, the club need a new goalkeeper.

Finance will be an issue for the club since they have other areas to strengthen as well but in that case, perhaps a move for Watford’s on-loan shot-stopper Costel Pantilimon could benefit the club.

Having joined Aitor Karanka’s side on a loan deal from Watford last summer, Pantilimon has gone on to put in some brilliant displays for the side.

As per a report from Watford Observer, Forest are understandably keen on signing him on a permanent basis. However, if Leeds play their cards right, they might still stand a chance of beating them to his signature. Pantilimon is everything Wiedwald is not and having him in the team could make a massive difference for Leeds.

Pantilimon is reliable, consistent and makes quick decisions in goal which often leads to effective blockages. Furthermore, the 31-year-old boasts of ample experience in English football and is blessed with lightning-fast reflexes as well.

Provided that Watford do not plan to keep him at the club, Leeds must make a last-ditch attempt to sign him this summer. It will not be easy but it is high time Leeds adopt a bolder approach in transfer windows.
