Swansea City would start the new year on the right foot by signing this versatile 23-year-old

Why Kasey Palmer could be a good signing for Swansea City

According to Sky Sports (h/t Bristol Live), Swansea City are weighing up a loan move for Bristol City attacker Kasey Palmer ahead of the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old, who spent the second half of the previous campaign on loan at Ashton Gate from Chelsea, joined Bristol City on a permanent deal this past summer, with the Robins fending off interest from Swansea City in the race to sign the versatile attacker. (h/t Bristol Live)

Palmer was amongst the regular starters under Lee Johnson earlier in the ongoing campaign but he has slipped down the pecking order over the past month or so, with his last start for the Robins in the Championship coming in the 4-1 defeat against West Brom back in November.

The former Chelsea academy prospect formed a good understanding with the likes of Benik Afobe and Andreas Weimann up top in the initial stages of the campaign. However, with Johnson showing more willingness to rely on Famara Diedhiou since Afobe’s injury, Palmer hasn’t found a regular place in the formations used by the Robins boss.

The former England U21 international has started 11 games in the Championship so far this term while featuring as a substitute on a further 8 occasions, contributing with a goal and three assists in 19 league appearances for Bristol City.

Palmer, who also had loan spells at Huddersfield Town, Derby County and Blackburn Rovers in the Championship earlier in his career, continues to be a key squad player at Ashton Gate but his limited involvement in the playing eleven in recent weeks has fuelled speculations over his future.

Meanwhile, Swansea City failed to close the gap on the playoff spots after being held to a goalless draw by relegation-threatened Barnsley in the Championship on Sunday.

The Swans found themselves going neck-to-neck with the likes of Leeds United and West Brom for an automatic promotion spot earlier in the season but a mediocre run of form over the past couple of months has resulted in a slip down to 9th in the standings.

Swansea are still only a point shy of the top-six and a surge for the playoffs shouldn’t be beyond their reach if the Swans manage to string together a decent run of results in the second half of the season.

A tally of just 31 goals scored in 25 games clearly suggests that the Welsh outfit haven’t offered enough in front of the goal and Cooper must revamp his attacking options.

Andre Ayew has been the star man up top but Swansea will need others to chip in as well if they are to mount a serious challenge for the playoffs and the club’s business in the January window could hold the key to their hopes.

To put things into perspective, Kasey Palmer doesn’t have the record to come through the door at Liberty Stadium as an instant upgrade on Swansea’s attacking options but he could well add some valuable depth to the club’s attacking options.

Verdict

With Cooper switching to a 4-3-3 formation in the last five games, as opposed to his previously used 4-2-3-1 system, a versatile playmaking forward like Palmer could bring that much-needed cutting-edge to Swansea’s attack.

The likes of Bersant Celina and George Byers have struggled to chip in with significant goal contributions so far while Yan Dhanda, Kristoffer Peterson, Barrie McKay, Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge have only played bit-part roles.

Palmer has some decent Championship experience under his belt and his arrival would certainly increase competition for places in Swansea’s attacking ranks whilst also facilitating squad rotation, with fixtures set to come thick and fast in the coming months.

It remains to be seen, however, whether Bristol City would be keen to sanction a loan deal for the 23-year-old, given that the Robins themselves are short of options in the final third following the injury to Afobe.

Having said that, Swansea City would bag quite a coup if they manage to secure the services of Kasey Palmer on loan during the mid-season window.
