Why Julian Draxler to Tottenham would be a smart signing
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing Tottenham attacker Christian Eriksen in January. Real Madrid want the midfielder too but PSG may swoop to hijack the deal.
Real Madrid have tracked Christian Eriksen for the last 18 months and had looked set to bring him to Santiago Bernabeu this summer after he confirmed his desire to leave Tottenham. Eriksen is in the final year of his contract in North London and does not seem keen on extending terms, despite being offered a new deal.
The Denmark international like many of his Tottenham teammates has endured a horrendous run of form for much of the season so far. Spurs could look to move him on in January as they look to recoup a transfer fee for him, as the playmaker’s deal at the club expires in June 2020.
The report adds PSG want to offload Leandro Parades and Julian Draxler in order to sign Eriksen in January. That being said, should Tottenham revive their interest in Draxler and aim for a swap deal?
Absolutely, it makes sense! Back in June, the Daily Star had claimed Spurs were offered Julian Draxler as a potential Eriksen replacement, but they didn’t make a move. Draxler is deemed surplus to requirements at PSG and they were looking to sell players to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP).
While the Ligue 1 giants couldn’t sell the World Cup winner in summer, they want to part ways with him in the New Year. And that’s exactly when Spurs should pounce to sign the 25-year-old, who has made 120 appearances for the Parisians since joining them, scoring 20 goals and providing 25 assists.
Draxler has so far failed to fully recognise the potential he showed during his time in the Bundesliga. Yet, he is 25 and Pochettino could just be the right manager to revive his stuttering career. Pochettino has excellent man-management skills and has shown his ability to get the best out of a lot of players so far at Tottenham.

The Germany international would benefit a lot working under Pochettino, whilst potentially replacing Eriksen at Spurs. Draxler’s vision is exceptional and his ability to find a player even in the tightest of angles will make him a quality addition to Pochettino’s side. Just like Eriksen, he can play both as a 10, in a midfield three and also on both wings which would open up a plethora of options to the Spurs boss.
Verdict
Draxler represents a readymade replacement for Eriksen and signing him during the January transfer window makes so much sense for Spurs. As PSG are interested in signing Eriksen, Spurs could perhaps put forth a question regarding a swap deal.
